BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University softball team extended its winning streak to nine straight on Saturday afternoon after sweeping visiting Clarion University by identical 8-0 scores - both in six innings - at Jan M. Hutchinson Field. The Huskies, who honored their five seniors, improved to 20-12 overall and 11-1 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Central Division. The Golden Eagles dropped to 5-33 overall and 1-11 in divisional play.
Senior
Taylor Parker (Dewart, Pa./Warrior Run) and junior
Alyssa Davies (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood) combined to allow only seven hits in the two games on Saturday as the Golden Eagles' offense was held silent. Parker pitched a complete-game two-hitter in the opener to improve to 10-5 on the season. She walked two and struck out nine. Davies, meanwhile, made her first start of the season in game two and tossed a complete-game five-hit shutout to move her record to 2-1. She walked one and struck out five.
With the two shutouts on Saturday, Huskies' pitchers have now thrown six consecutive shutouts and have not allowed a run in 37 consecutive innings.
In the opener, the Huskies wasted little time jumping on Clarion's game one starter, Kira Smith as Bloomsburg scored four times in the bottom of the first to take a 4-0 lead. Sophomore
Taylor Winkelman (Springfield, Pa/Springfield) was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and then scored when junior
Emily Mayhew (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) doubled down the right field line. Parker followed with a run-scoring single back up the middle to extend the advantage to 2-0. Three batters later, junior
Maggie Hall (Cooperstown, N.Y./Cooperstown) reached on a bunt single to drive home Parker for the third run of the inning. Senior
Natalie Quinlan (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby) added a run-scoring single, later in the frame, for the fourth run of the inning.
The bats went silent until the fourth when the Huskies added a single run on a squeeze bunt from Quinlan that plated junior
Erin Smith (Tunkhannock, Pa./Tunkhannock Area) to extend the lead to 5-0. Smith led off the inning with a bunt single and then scampered to third on a throwing error. Bloomsburg added another in the bottom of the fifth as Smith singled to left field to drive home sophomore
Emily Getz (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) who reached on a two-out walk to start the rally.
Bloomsburg ended the game in the sixth with a pair of runs. Mayhew plated the first with a run-scoring double while the second scored when senior
Holly Peacock (Williamsport, Pa./Jersey Shore) reached on an error to end the contest.
The Huskies had nine hits in the opener - two each from Mayhew and Smith.
In game two, Bloomsburg scored a run in the first against Clarion starter, Rachel Hoffman, to take a 1-0 lead. Winkelman led off the inning with a bunt single, stole second, stole third, and then scored on a squeeze bunt from Parker for the first run of the game.
In the bottom of the second, sophomore
Marissa Shelhamer (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Sophomore
Alexa Erney (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) singled to right field but the ball was misplayed and rolled all the way to the fence which allowed Shelhamer to come all the way around to score for a 2-0 lead.
Three more runs crossed the plate in the bottom of the third as the Huskies jumped in front, 5-0. Mayhew and Parker led off with back-to-back singles and Getz followed with a bunt single to load the bases with nobody out. Mayhew scored the first run on a wild pitch and, two batters later, Erney drove home Parker with a sacrifice fly. Hall added an RBI single, scoring Getz, for the third run of the inning.
In the fourth, Winkelman doubled with one out and then scored on a two-run blast to left field by Parker - her sixth round-tripper of the season.
Mayhew ended the contest with an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth.
The Huskies had nine more hits in game two - a pair each from Winkelman, Mayhew, and Parker.
Prior to the game, the Huskies honored their five seniors -

Mallory Tomaschik (Catawissa, Pa./Southern Columbia),
Holly Peacock (Williamsport, Pa./Jersey Shore),
Anna McElroy (Jessup, Pa./Valley View), and
