CLARION, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University softball team remained perfect in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Central Division on Sunday afternoon with a pair of victories at Clarion University. The Huskies won game one, 10-1, in five innings and then posted a 3-0 shutout victory in game two to improve to 11-11 overall and 4-0 in league play. The Golden Eagles dropped to 3-23 overall and 0-2 in conference action.
For the second straight day, the Huskies got stellar pitching performances from seniors
Taylor Parker (Dewart, Pa./Warrior Run) and
Mallory Tomaschik (Catawissa, Pa./Southern Columbia). Parker allowed only one hit on Sunday - a two-out solo home run in the top of the first inning of game one - while Tomaschik, who pitched a five-inning no-hitter on Saturday against Mansfield, allowed only two hits on Sunday afternoon in game two.
The duo combined to allow only one run on seven hits in doubleheader sweeps of Mansfield and Clarion over the weekend.
In game one on Sunday, Bloomsburg took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when junior
Emily Mayhew (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) lifted a sacrifice fly to left field which scored freshman
Julia Knight (Kennett Square, Pa./Unionville). Clarion's Cassidy Runyan tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first with a two-out solo home run off Parker.
But, the Huskies blew the game open in the top of the second as six runs came across for a 7-1 advantage. Senior
Holly Peacock (Williamsport, Pa./Jersey Shore) led off the inning with a double and then advanced to third when freshman
Kelsey Impink (Schwenksville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) singled. Junior
Bridget Casey (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) brought home Peacock with an RBI fielder's choice for a 2-1 lead. After an error and a single from sophomore
Taylor Winkelman (Springfield, Pa/Springfield), Knight singled to score Casey to extend the lead to 3-1. Parker and Mayhew followed with back-to-back two-run doubles to balloon Bloomsburg's advantage to 7-1.
Bloomsburg added three more runs in the top of the fifth to take a 10-1 lead. Freshman
Ashli Venokur (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick) led off the frame with a single but was retired when she wandered off second base too far after Winkelman singled. Sophomore
Alexa Erney (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) doubled to put runners at second and third with one out. Winkelman scored on a wild pitch to make it 8-1 and then Parker and Mayhew collected back-to-back RBI hits - Parker a single and Mayhew a double - for the Huskies' ninth and tenth runs of the game.
Parker allowed a walk in the bottom of the fifth but Clarion could not score and the game ended.
Parker allowed only one run on one hit. She walked one and struck out seven to improve to 6-4 on the year. She was also 4-for-4 with two doubles and three runs batted in. Winkleman, Mayhew, and Impink added two hits apiece as Bloomsburg finished the contest with 14 hits against two Clarion pitchers.
Tomaschik got the ball in game two and was locked in a pitchers' duel with Clarion's Rachel Hoffman as neither team could score for the first three innings.
In the top of the fourth, Parker started a Huskies' rally when she was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Junior
Maggie Hall (Cooperstown, N.Y./Cooperstown) sacrificed Parker to second and then, with two outs, sophomore
Marissa Shelhamer (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) belted a two-run home run to give the Huskies a 2-0 lead. It was her first home run of the season and the third of her career.
The Huskies added a single run in the top of the fifth to take a 3-0 lead. Winkelman singled and stole second with two outs and then scored when Knight singled.
Tomaschik did the rest as she allowed only two hits - a leadoff single in the third and a two-out single in the fifth - to complete the shutout victory. She did not walk a batter and struck out eight to improve to 4-6 overall on the season. Bloomsburg finished with six hits against Hoffman - two each from Knight and Shelhamer.
Bloomsburg will be back in action on Tuesday, April 4, when it hosts East Stroudsburg University at Jan M. Hutchinson Field. Start time of the doubleheader is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
