Indiana, Pa. – The Bloomsburg University softball team split its' doubleheader with Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) foe, IUP on Friday. Bloomsburg won game one, 9-5, while IUP took game two, 5-2.
The Huskies move to 22-14 (12-2 PSAC) while the Crimson Hawks are now 19-16 (8-6 PSAC) on the season.
GAME ONE RECAP
The Huskies jumped out to a 1-0 lead after the top of the first inning thanks to a RBI single from
Emily Getz (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) that scored
Taylor Winkelman (Springfield, Pa/Springfield).
In the top of the second,
Alexa Erney (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) led off with a solo home run to center field. Later in the inning,
Emily Mayhew (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) bunted for an infield single and scored
Erin Smith (Tunkhannock, Pa./Tunkhannock Area), to give Bloomsburg a 3-0 advantage.
Emily Getz (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) doubled to left center field and drove in Mayhew to cap off a three-run inning for the Huskies.
An error by the Huskies kept the bottom portion of the second inning alive for IUP, and it capitalized with a Lauren Zola double that plated two Crimson Hawks, making it a 4-2 contest.
Holly Peacock (Williamsport, Pa./Jersey Shore) launched a three-run home run in the top of the fourth that drove in Getz and
Taylor Parker (Dewart, Pa./Warrior Run). Bloomsburg added two more runs in the top of the sixth inning when
Kelsey Impink (Schwenksville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) homered with Parker on second base, giving the Huskies a 9-1 lead heading into the final inning.
IUP threatened in its' last at-bat, as Hannah Mercer hit a three-run home run down the right field line to cut the deficit to just four. However, Parker composed herself and recorded the final three outs to give the Huskies the win. The senior pitcher fanned nine and gave up just four hits as she earned her 12
th win of the year.
GAME TWO RECAP
The second contest of the day belonged to the Crimson Hawks, who got on the board in the bottom of the third with a home run by Kaitlyn Beers.
In the fourth inning, IUP took advantage of more Bloomsburg errors, and added two more runs on doubles from Laura Cotter and Mackenna Miller. The Crimson Hawks would push their lead to 5-0 after five innings with a RBI double from Lauren Goetz and a RBI single by Mercer.
Bloomsburg had a mini-run in its' last at-bat, as
Anna McElroy (Jessup, Pa./Valley View) and
Marissa Shelhamer (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) each drove in runs, but the Huskies would not score again.
