BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University women's basketball team lost their Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) game to visiting Shippensburg 83-64 on Wednesday (Jan. 24).
Shippensburg led 21-12 after one quarter, with Bloomsburg keeping the game within one possession for most of the frame. An opening layup by Kristin McGeough was countered by a three-pointer from
Marissa Molnar (Erie, Pa./McDowell), before Ariel Jones got her night started with a long ball of her own. After a split pair of free throws by Kryshell Gordy,
Emma Saxton (York, Pa./Central York) got in on the scoring with a jumper to get Bloomsburg within one at 6-5 halfway through the quarter. Coming out of the media timeout, back-to-back layups by Gordy put Shippensburg up 10-5 with 3:11 to play in the frame. With just under three minutes to play, Victoria Blackburn scored a layup to get the visitors' lead to seven. The two teams went scoreless until the two-minute mark when Jones knocked down another long ball to stretch the lead to 10.
Meghan Corridoni (Exeter, Pa./Holy Redeemer) responded with a jumper to make it a 15-7 game with 1:44 left in the quarter, before another triple from Jones got the Raiders back up by double digits. Lili Benzel and Molnar would trade three-pointers to end the first quarter, leaving the Raiders up by nine.
After the second quarter began, Jones scored a layup to re-gain the Raiders' double-digit lead. In the second, Shippensburg led by as many as 15 while not letting the lead below double-digits. They out-scored Bloomsburg 19-15 in the quarter and led 40-27 after 20 minutes.
The lead would grow in the third quarter for the Raiders, as they led many as 21 and did not let the lead under 16. The Raiders would win the third quarter 20-13.
The Huskies would trim into the deficit in the final frame, but the Raiders would still hold their double-digit lead until the final horn.
As a team, Bloomsburg shot 37.9 percent (22-58) from the field, 33.3 percent (6-18) from three-point range and 77.8 percent (14-18) from the foul line. The Huskies scored 24 points in the paint, 16 off turnovers and two off of fast breaks. Bloomsburg out-scored Shippensburg 12-8 in second chance points, and also 28-14 off the bench. Saxton led the Huskies with 15 points, while Molnar added 10. Nine other Huskies scored in the loss. BU pulled down 28 rebounds in the game, led by five from
Darcy Lee (Altoona, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle). Saxton was the only Husky to play at least 30 minutes on the night, logging a total of 34. Molnar tied career-highs with four field goals and three assists on the night, while also logging a career-best 29 minutes. Corridoni marked a new career-high in blocks with four, while Saxton recorded a career-high three steals.
Amanda Arellano (Mt. Carmel, Pa./Mt. Carmel) recorded four steals on the night for a new career-high, while
Marianna Maldonado (Stroudsburg, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) scored a career-high seven in the contest.
Bella Ricci (Etters, Pa./Red Land) logged a career-best 14 minutes, while
Lauren Oeth (Doylestown, Pa./Germantown Academy) set a new career-high from the free throw line going 5-6.
The loss moves the Huskies to 6-14 and 3-11 in league play, while Shippensburg moves to 4-14 and 3-9 in the conference with the win.
The Huskies hit the road on Saturday (Jan. 27) when they travel to eastern division foe West Chester for a PSAC matinee. Tip-off is slated for 1:00 p.m.
