#23 Women's Soccer Wins Fifth Straight; Blanks Seton Hill 1-0 Friday Afternoon

HTML BOX SCORE

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - Sophomore Mackenzie Gebhardt (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) scored 91 seconds into the match and redshirt sophomore Jenna Hawkins (Fleetwood, Pa./Fleetwood) made the lead stand up as the 23rd-ranked Bloomsburg University women's soccer team blanked visiting Seton Hill University, 1-0, at Steph Pettit Stadium on Friday afternoon. With the win, the Huskies extended their winning streak to five and extended their unbeaten streak to six (5-0-1) as they improved to 9-2-1 overall with an identical 9-2-1 mark against Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) opponents. The Griffins, meanwhile, dropped to 8-4-1 overall and 7-4-1 in league play.

Combined with a Millersville loss on Friday, the Huskies are now tied for first in the PSAC standings with two weeks left in the regular season.

Before fans even had a chance to get comfortable, Gebhardt received an outlet pass from senior Allie Barber (Pittston Township, Pa./Pittston Area), got behind the Griffin defense, and beat goalkeeper Jessica Neill on a breakaway opportunity to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead. It was Gebhardt's third goal of the season as she moved into second on the team while Barber collected her fourth assist of the year and has now recorded at least one point in each of the last five contests.

Hawkins was tested early as she made a couple of tough saves to keep the Huskies in front. She robbed Italia Biondi in the third minute with a diving stop and, later, made a leaping stop on Emily LoPresti on a shot that was destined to sneak in under the crossbar.

Shots favored Seton Hill in the first half, 9-6, with the Griffins holding a 6-1 lead in shots on goal.

The Huskies maintained possession for much of the second half and kept the Griffins from mustering any offensive pressure. In fact, the Griffins had just one shot attempt in the second half as Biondi booted a shot wide with just over one minute left in regulation.

Bloomsburg outshot Seton Hill, 5-1, in the second half which led to an 11-10 Huskies' advantage for the contest. The hosts also held a slim, 3-2, edge in corner kick opportunities.

Hawkins recorded her PSAC-leading eighth shutout of the season as she turned aside six shots - all in the first half - to improve to 9-2-1 on the season. She has allowed only one goal over the last 551:06 as her goals against average lowered to 0.41 while her save percentage increased to .853 on the year. Neill, meanwhile, stopped three Bloomsburg shots as her record dropped to 7-4-1 on the season.

Bloomsburg will be on the road Sunday afternoon, October 14, when it heads to East Stroudsburg for a showdown with the Warriors. Bloomsburg and East Stroudsburg are tied for the top spot in the league standings as both teams have identical 9-2-1 records in conference play. Kickoff from Eiler-Martin Stadium is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
