INDIANA, Pa. - Senior
Tali Wehner (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg) scored with 1:58 left in the first overtime to lift the seventh-ranked Bloomsburg University field hockey team to a 2-1 victory at Indiana University of Pennsylvania on Saturday evening. The Huskies improved to 7-3 overall and earned their first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) victory of the season as they improved to 1-2 in league play. The Crimson Hawks dropped to 3-8 overall and 2-2 in conference action.
Wehner weaved through a number of IUP defenders and beat Crimson Hawks' goalkeeper Olivia Accardi on a breakaway opportunity to propel the Huskies to their first league win of the season. It was Wehner's first goal of the year and just the second goal of her collegiate career - her first goal came against Mansfield in a 6-0 win on September 14, 2016. Earlier in the year, Wehner did score the decisive goal in the sixth round of shootouts in a season-opening win over Lindenwood.
Bloomsburg statistically dominated IUP on the night as the Huskies held a 31-7 advantage in shots and a whopping 26-4 edge in penalty corners. The margins were particularly lopsided in the second half and overtime where Bloomsburg combined to outshoot IUP, 25-1, and hold a 21-1 advantage in penalty corner opportunities.
Despite that, the Huskies had to come from behind as the Crimson Hawks scored the only goal of the first half to grab a 1-0 lead at the break. Hannah Miller banged home a rebound past sophomore goalkeeper
Dana Sheply (Maple Shade, N.J./Maple Shade) in the 14th minute to give the hosts a 1-0 advantage. Kalista Gioglio had the assist.
Bloomsburg tied the game at 1-1 when junior
Ali McKay (Dover, Del./Polytech) deflected a shot from junior
Tesa Hoffman (Freeburg, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) just under seven minutes into the second half. It was McKay's second goal of the season while Hoffman collected her fifth assist of the year on the marker. The Huskies had a number of opportunities to earn the victory in regulation but then had to hold off the Crimson Hawks after the buzzer had sounded as Sheply had to make a save on IUP's Brianna Lubarsky on a penalty corner in extra time to force the overtime period.
Sheply improved to 3-2 on the season as she was credited with a pair of saves. Accardi dropped to 3-8 on the year despite turning aside 20 Bloomsburg shots. She also received some help during the Huskies' shot barrage in the second half as Juliette Sauter earned a pair of defensive saves - one on freshman
Foto Tsioles (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) and one on sophomore
Cheyenne Ott (Mount Bethel, Pa./Bangor).
The Huskies will be back in action on Wednesday, October 17, when they travel to West Chester to battle the top-ranked Golden Rams. Start time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
