Women's Volleyball Suffers Straight-Set Loss At Pitt-Johnstown Saturday Afternoon

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University women's volleyball team lost in straight sets at Pitt-Johnstown on Saturday afternoon - 25-20, 25-10, 25-14 - in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup between two teams in the Central Division. The Huskies fell to 5-15 overall and 1-10 in league play while the Mountain Cats improved to 13-10 overall and 7-4 in conference action.

For the second consecutive match, the Huskies could not generate much in the way of offense as Bloomsburg finished with 23 kills on the day - 11 of those coming in the opening set. Redshirt senior Sarah Gomish (Ebensburg, Pa./Bishop Carroll Catholic) led the Huskies with six kills while also chipping in with nine digs on the afternoon. Freshman Grace Giza (Plymouth, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) led with eight points after recording five kills, two solo blocks, and two assisted blocks. Freshmen Alora Conrad (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) and Mia Nicholes (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) added four kills apiece while Nicholes also chipped in with four assisted blocks. Freshmen Bryn Stek (Ambler, Pa./Upper Dublin) and Emma Van Arsdale (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) tied for the team lead with ten assists apiece while sophomore Alyssa Cianciulli (Royersford, Pa./Pope John Paul II) posted a match-high 22 digs.

The Mountain Cats were led by Maura Brehl who had a double-double with 13 kills and 11 digs. Caitlin Vrabel and Noelle Carota added nine kills apiece. J.C.Longeville had 25 assists and eight digs while Erin Carmody had a team-high 16 digs for Pitt-Johnstown.

Bloomsburg hit just .056 on the day with Giza (five kills, one error, 13 attempts) and Conrad (four kills, zero errors, 13 attempts) tying for the team-high by hitting .308. The Mountain Cats, meanwhile, hit .270 with Carota (nine kills, zero errors, 18 attempts) leading the way at a .500 clip. The Huskies did, however, win the battle at the net as they out-blocked Pitt-Johnstown, 6-3.

The Huskies will be back in action next Friday, October 19, and Saturday, October 20, when they head west for matchups against Slippery Rock and Edinboro, respectively. Start time against The Rock is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. while the match against the Fighting Scots is slated to begin at 1:00 p.m.
