BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - Sophomore
Natalie Holmes (Laurel, Md./Archbishop Spalding) scored on a penalty kick in the 71st minute to lift the 15th-ranked Bloomsburg University women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over visiting Goldey-Beacom College on a blustery Wednesday night at Steph Pettit Stadium. It marked the lone non-conference match of the season for the Huskies, who improved to 11-2-1 overall. The Lightning, meanwhile, dropped to 12-4 on the year.
With the victory, the Huskies extended their winning streak to seven straight and lengthened their unbeaten streak to eight consecutive matches (7-0-1). Both streaks are the longest for the program since the Huskies rattled off seven straight wins and had an unbeaten streak of eight straight from October 1 to October 29 of the 2008 season.
The Huskies dominated statistically as they outshot Goldey-Beacom, 18-6, and had six corner kicks to the Lightning's one. But, the lone goal came after a handball in the box gave Bloomsburg a penalty kick opportunity. Holmes took the shot and beat Goldey-Beacom goalkeeper Marta Lopez to the far side for her third goal of the season - all coming on penalty kicks. It was her first collegiate game-winning goal.
Bloomsburg then did what it has done all year as it slammed the door on the Goldey-Beacom offense as the Lightning could muster only two shot attempts the rest of the night. It was the Huskies' 11th shutout of the season and seventh during the eight-game unbeaten streak.
Sophomore
Olivia Schantz (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland) made her first collegiate start in goal for the Huskies and turned aside five Goldey-Beacom shots for her first career shutout. She appeared in three matches as a freshman a season ago and played in relief at Clarion on September 29 of this season for her only appearance of the year prior to Wednesday night. Lopez, meanwhile, stopped six Bloomsburg shots as she saw her record drop to 12-4 on the season.
The Huskies honored their five seniors prior to opening kickoff on Wednesday night -
Allie Barber (Pittston Township, Pa./Pittston Area),
Erin Bielski (York, Pa./Century (Md.)),
Taylor Sneidman (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley),
Jessica Supp (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge), and
Taylor Zucco (Glenwood, Md./Glenelg). Four of the five seniors started for the Huskies with only two-year captain, Supp, not able to start due to a season-ending injury during preseason.
Bloomsburg, which dropped to second place in the PSAC standings after Kutztown's 2-1 win over East Stroudsburg on Wednesday, will return to conference action on Saturday afternoon, October 20, when it heads to Pitt-Johnstown to battle the Mountain Cats. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
