#15 Women's Soccer Extends Winning Streak To Eight; Shuts Out Pitt-Johnstown, 5-0, Saturday

HTML BOX SCORE

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - The 15th-ranked Bloomsburg University women's soccer team extended its winning streak to eight straight and lengthened its unbeaten streak to nine as the Huskies rolled over Pitt-Johnstown, 5-0, on Saturday afternoon at Point Stadium. With the win, coupled with Kutztown's loss at Seton Hill, Bloomsburg moved into sole possession of first place in the PSAC standings as it improved to 12-2-1 overall and 11-2-1 in league play. The Mountain Cats dropped to 5-11 overall and 4-10 in conference action.

The eight-game winning streak is the longest in program history since winning nine consecutive matches from September 26 to October 24, 1998. Meanwhile, the nine-game unbeaten streak is the longest since rattling off ten straight without a loss from September 1 to October 6, 2001.

Sophomore Lauren Hoelke (Blackwood, N.J./Highland Regional) had a career afternoon for the Huskies as she scored one goal and assisted on three others to pace the offensive attack. Senior Taylor Sneidman (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley), junior Jessica Milligan (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge), and sophomores Natalie Holmes (Laurel, Md./Archbishop Spalding) and Sam Rodkey (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove) also scored for Bloomsburg in the victory. The five goals was a season-high for the Huskies while the shutout was the team's fourth consecutive and eighth in the last nine matches.

Holmes started the scoring when she picked off a loose ball and beat Pitt-Johnstown goalkeeper Leigh Appolonia from the top of the box just 9:37 into the match. It was her fourth goal of the season and proved to be her second game-winning goal in as many matches. Milligan followed with her first goal of the season in the 20th minute to extend the lead to 2-0. Milligan's goal, just the second of her career, was a header off of a corner kick opportunity that was taken by Hoelke.

Bloomsburg added the final three goals in the second half to break the game open. Hoelke notched her second goal of the year in the 64th minute off of a centering feed from freshman Nicole Varano (Paxinos, Pa./Mt. Carmel) to balloon the advantage to 3-0. Then, in the 74th minute, Sneidman headed a free kick from Hoelke into the back of the Pitt-Johnstown goal for her third marker of the year to extend the lead to 4-0. Rodkey finished off the scoring in the 88th minute when she headed a corner kick from Hoelke past backup netminder Maria Mosquera.

Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Jenna Hawkins (Fleetwood, Pa./Fleetwood) posted two saves to record her PSAC-leading tenth shutout of the year. Her 10 shutouts are tied for second-most in a single season in program history as Heather Hartman holds the record with 12 during the 2001 season. She has allowed only one goal in the last 731:06 of action as she lowered her goals against average to 0.35 and upped her save percentage to .865 on the year. She improved to 11-2-1 on the season.

The Huskies held a 30-5 advantage in shots and blanked the Mountain Cats in corner kick opportunities, 5-0. Appolonia suffered the loss for Pitt-Johnstown as she allowed the first three goals of the match to fall to 4-11-1 on the season. She was credited with six saves. Mosquera gave up the final two goals and posted four saves.

Bloomsburg heads to eighth-ranked Kutztown (13-3-0, 11-3-0 PSAC) for a battle for first-place on Wednesday, October 24. The Huskies currently hold a one-point lead over both Kutztown and Millersville in the standings. Start time is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
