BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The ninth-ranked Bloomsburg University field hockey team had a number of scoring opportunities on Saturday morning but could not crack the scoreboard as the Huskies were blanked by fifth-ranked Shippensburg, 2-0, at Steph Pettit Stadium. Bloomsburg lost for the second straight time to fall to 7-5 overall and 1-4 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) standings while the Raiders improved to 10-3 overall and 4-2 in league play.
Shippensburg got on the board with just over 12 minutes left in the first half when Jenna Sluymer picked up her own rebound and fired a shot just inside the near post past sophomore goalkeeper
Dana Sheply (Maple Shade, N.J./Maple Shade) to give the Raiders a 1-0 advantage. It was her sixth goal of the season and was the only goal of the opening half.
The Raiders held a slim, 9-7, edge in shots during the opening half and had four penalty corner opportunities to Bloomsburg's three.
The Huskies owned a majority of the play and a majority of the scoring chances in the second half but it was the Raiders who were able to net the only goal of the stanza. Sluymer sent a pass towards the circle that Adrienne McGarrigle was able to corral behind the Huskies' defense. McGarrigle trickled a shot towards the goal that snuck through the legs of Sheply and into the back of the cage to extend the lead to 2-0 in the 50th minute. It was McGarrigle's fourth goal of the year.
The goal prompted a change in goal as sophomore
Hannah Barnard (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) took over but did not see a shot over her 19:20 of action as Bloomsburg maintained severe pressure on the Raiders. But, the hosts could not beat goalkeeper Ally Mooney and Shippensburg was able to escape with the win.
Bloomsburg outshot Shippensburg, 11-2, in the second half and finished with an 18-11 edge in the contest. The Huskies also had six penalty corners in the second half - nine for the game - while the Raiders had four in the second half and eight for the contest. Bloomsburg's issue was that only four of its 18 shots were on goal as Mooney turned aside all four to improve to 10-3 on the year. Sheply stopped six shots in 50:40 of action and dropped to 3-4 on the season.
The Huskies will get right back to work on Tuesday, October 23, when they host Mansfield University at Steph Pettit Stadium. Start time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
