Gomish Records 1,000th Career Dig As Women's Volleyball Falls To Mercyhurst Friday

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University women's volleyball team dropped a four-set match to visiting Mercyhurst University on Friday night at the Nelson Field House as its record dropped to 5-19 overall and 1-13 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Central Division. The Lakers improved to 10-17 overall and 5-9 in league action. Mercyhurst won the first two sets - 25-23, 25-16 - before the Huskies staved off elimination with a 25-23 victory in the third set. However, the Lakers took the fourth set, 25-19, to close out the match.

Redshirt senior Sarah Gomish (Ebensburg, Pa./Bishop Carroll Catholic) posted a double-double with 18 kills and 14 digs while also chipping in with a pair of blocks. Her fourth dig of the night allowed her to reach 1,000 digs for her collegiate career - her second milestone of the season. She posted her 1,000th career kill on September 15 against California. Freshman Mary Kate Mooney (Royersford, Pa./Pope John Paul II) had eight kills and 16 digs while freshmen Grace Giza (Plymouth, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) and Mia Nicholes (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) added seven and six kills, respectively. Giza also led the Huskies with four blocks - two solo and two assisted - while Nicholes had one solo block and two assisted blocks.

Freshman Bryn Stek (Ambler, Pa./Upper Dublin) also had a double-double with 29 assists and 16 digs. Sophomore Alyssa Cianciulli (Royersford, Pa./Pope John Paul II) led the Huskies with 30 digs defensively.

Mercyhurst had three players in double figures in kills led by Katie Baird who had 18. Alyssa Zirnheld and Alyssa Kling had 10 kills each. Mary Marusza had 47 assists and 17 digs on the night while Hannah Vuylsteke had a team-high 27 digs in the victory.

The Huskies finished with 44 kills on the night while hitting .113 on offense. Bloomsburg had 10 team blocks which was a season-high. Mercyhurst totaled 59 kills while hitting at a .157 clip.

Bloomsburg will get right back to work on Saturday afternoon when it hosts 20th-ranked Gannon University at the Nelson Field House. Start time is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
