KUTZTOWN, Pa. - The sixth-ranked Bloomsburg University field hockey team opened Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action on Wednesday night with a 1-0 loss at eighth-ranked Kutztown University. The Huskies dropped to 5-2 overall while the Golden Bears improved to 8-1 on the season. It was the conference opener for both teams.
Both Bloomsburg losses this season have come at the hands of the Golden Bears who previously knocked off the Huskies, 2-1, at Steph Pettit Stadium on September 19.
The game was scoreless until Kyra Wozniak scored her team-leading 11th goal of the season with 3:35 left in regulation as she deflected a shot over the blocker of sophomore goalkeeper
Dana Sheply (Maple Shade, N.J./Maple Shade) who was making her second consecutive start between the pipes. Rachel Dusman was credited with the assist.
The Huskies were shut down by the Kutztown defense all night as Bloomsburg was unable to get a shot attempt off during the entire contest. The Golden Bears outshot the Huskies, 10-0, and held a 4-1 edge in penalty corners.
Sheply played well in goal but saw her record drop to 1-1 on the season despite turning aside five shots. The sophomore has allowed only one goal in her two starts this season. Katie Dotterweich started for Kutztown and improved to 8-1 on the season with the victory.
Bloomsburg will look to regroup when it returns to the friendly confines of Steph Pettit Stadium on Sunday, October 7, when it hosts Queens University of Charlotte at 11:00 a.m. The game will serve as Kids' Day as children of all ages are invited to come make signs to support the Huskies before the contest and then have an opportunity to play with and get autographs from Huskies' players concluding the match.
