BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The sixth-ranked Bloomsburg University field hockey team got goals from four different players, including three freshmen who scored their first collegiate goals, and sophomore goalkeeper
Dana Sheply (Maple Shade, N.J./Maple Shade) stopped six shots in her third consecutive start as the Huskies blanked visiting Queens University of Charlotte, 4-0, on Sunday at Steph Pettit Stadium. It marked the final non-conference game of the season for Bloomsburg, which improved to 6-2 overall on the year. The Royals dropped to an identical 6-2 mark and had their six-game winning streak snapped in the process.
The Huskies wasted little time getting on the board as freshman
Foto Tsioles (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) redirected a shot from senior
Tali Wehner (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg) past Queens goalkeeper Jet van den Berg just 2:52 into the contest to give Bloomsburg a 1-0 advantage. The goal was Tsioles' first in her collegiate career while the assist by Wehner was her first point of the campaign.
That, however, proved to be the only goal of the opening half despite the Huskies outshooting the Royals, 10-4, and holding a significant edge in penalty corner opportunities, 8-1, during the opening 35 minutes.
Bloomsburg extended the lead to 2-0 just 1:36 into the second half when a penalty stroke was awarded for the Huskies. Freshman
Callie Edwards (Swoyersville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) had her number called to take the shot and she beat van den Berg to the top right corner of the net for her first collegiate goal. The Huskies had been 0-for-3 on penalty strokes through the first seven games of the season before Edwards' goal. Twenty minutes later, freshman
Sydney Rimmer (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) got into the scoring act with her first collegiate tally as she banged home a rebound off of a penalty corner to extend the lead to 3-0. Sophomore
Cheyenne Ott (Mount Bethel, Pa./Bangor) took the initial shot while senior
Erica Krebs (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia), who took the corner, picked up the other assist.
Krebs then finished off the scoring in the 61st minute with a slapshot from just inside the circle. The tally was Krebs' fifth of the year as she tied junior
Tesa Hoffman (Freeburg, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) for the team lead in that department.
Sheply did the rest as she turned aside six shots for her second shutout in three starts this season. Two of her saves, in particular, were impressive as she climbed the ladder with the blocker to make a save on Mazvita Mtisi late in the first half and then Paige Ramsey late in the second half to preserve the shutout. She also got help from senior
Jackie Shragher (Holland, Pa./Council Rock South) who was credited with a defensive save in the 50th minute. Sheply improved to 2-1 on the year and lowered her goals against average to 0.33 while upping her save percentage to .944. van den Berg, meanwhile, stopped 11 Bloomsburg shots as she dropped to 4-1 on the year.
Bloomsburg held a 22-10 advantage in shots and a 15-6 edge in penalty corners.
The Huskies return home on Tuesday, October 9, to host third-ranked East Stroudsburg in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) battle at Steph Pettit Stadium. Start time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
