BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The seventh-ranked Bloomsburg University field hockey team dropped a 3-0 decision to second-ranked East Stroudsburg University on Tuesday afternoon in a battle of top ten teams at Steph Pettit Stadium. The Huskies dropped to 6-3 overall and 0-2 against Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) foes this season while the Warriors improved to 8-2 overall and 3-0 in league play.
The visitors got on the board just over ten minutes into the contest when Emily Spangler fired a shot past sophomore goalkeeper
Dana Sheply (Maple Shade, N.J./Maple Shade) off of a penalty corner. Kelli Shapiro, who took the corner, was credited with the assist. Seven minutes later, Celeste Veenstra floated a shot from the right side of the circle over the head of Sheply and into the back of the net for a 2-0 advantage.
Three minutes into the second half, the Warriors extended the lead to 3-0 when Karly Conway danced her way into the circle and whistled a backhander past Sheply. Bloomsburg had a chance to get back in the contest as it was awarded six penalty corner opportunities over the final 14 minutes of regulation but the Huskies had three shots blocked by East Stroudsburg defenders on those chances and were unable to dent the scoreboard.
The Warriors held a 15-4 advantage in shot attempts with the Huskies holding a slim, 6-5, edge in penalty corners. Sheply stopped a season-high eight shots as she saw her record fall to 2-2 on the season. Her counterpart, Maddie Richie, made just one save on the day - off of a shot from senior
Erica Krebs (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) in the 51st minute - to earn her fourth shutout of the season. She improved to 8-2 on the year.
Bloomsburg will look to regroup when it goes on the road Saturday, October 13, to battle the Crimson Hawks of IUP. Start time is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
Earlier in the day, the Huskies dropped one spot in the latest Penn Monto/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division II poll.
