BLOOMSBURG—The ninth-ranked Millersville University field hockey team held off upset minded Bloomsburg University and came away with a 1-0 win on Wednesday afternoon at Steph Pettit Stadium in a PSAC matchup.
With the win Millersville goes to 11-5, 5-3 in the PSAC, while Bloomsburg falls to 9-6, 3-5 in the PSAC.
Early on, the game was a back and forth struggle with both teams playing excellent defense. In the opening 35 minutes the teams combined for just five shots on goal with just one penalty corner awarded.
It was on that penalty corner that Millersville scored the game's only goal. Kyra Brakfield delivered the ball to the top of the circle. The Marauders then moved the ball to the right with Erica Tarsi then sending a pass into the middle, just in front of the goal, where Aliza Mizak punched home the ball with 7:20 to go before halftime.
In the second half the Huskies put the pressure on Millersville forcing six second half penalty corner attempts. However, the Marauders' goalie Autumn Peters made saves on four shots, including a diving save on a shot from Ali McKay (Dover, Del./Polytech).
Bloomsburg goalie Dana Sheply (Maple Shade, N.J./Maple Shade) kept the game close by making four second half saves, including three in a 30-second flurry with less than six minutes to play.
The Huskies play at Slippery Rock on Sunday, Nov. 4 at 1 p.m.
