SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Junior
Willow Perkins (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) scored a pair of goals in the second half to snap at 1-1 tie and lift the Bloomsburg University field hockey team to a 3-1 victory at Slippery Rock University on Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Huskies improved to 10-6 overall and 4-5 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) standings. More importantly, Bloomsburg climbed into the sixth and final playoff spot - by virtue of holding a tiebreaker over Mansfield University - with one game remaining in the regular season. The Rock, meanwhile, dropped to 6-11 overall and 1-8 in the league standings.
The two-goal performance by Perkins marked the first multiple-goal game of her collegiate career and were the fifth and sixth goals in her three seasons with the Huskies. She moved into third on the team in scoring with three goals and two assists for eight points on the year and now has scored all three of her goals in the last three games.
Slippery Rock wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as Courtney Page gave The Rock a 1-0 lead just 1:13 in when she beat sophomore goalkeeper
Dana Sheply (Maple Shade, N.J./Maple Shade) for her third goal of the season. But, just before the opening half came to a close, freshman
Foto Tsioles (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) tied the match at 1-1 when she beat Slippery Rock netminder Maddie Murphy for her second goal of the year. Senior
Morgan McAllister (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) picked up the assist on the goal with a cross from the right side into the circle. It was McAllister's first point of the year.
Shots favored Bloomsburg in the opening half, 6-5.
Perkins notched her first goal of the game, and second of the season, just 8:17 into the second half to give the Huskies their first lead of the game at 2-1. Just over three minutes later, in the 46th minute, Perkins drove into the circle again and beat Murphy to the left side for her second goal of the game, and third of the year, to extend the Huskies' lead to 3-1.
The Huskies' defense did the rest as they shut down Slippery Rock for the rest of match, allowing only a wide shot attempt off the stick of Hannah Downing in the 63rd minute.
Bloomsburg held a 4-2 advantage in shots in the second half and totaled a 10-7 margin for the match. The Rock had the only two penalty corner opportunities of the second half as both teams finished with six penalty corners on the day. Sheply improved to 6-5 on the season as she turned aside four Slippery Rock shots. Murphy made one save in 46:39 of action as she was saddled with the loss to fall to 6-11 on the year. Hannah Nurse played the final 23:21 and did not face a shot.
A postseason berth will come down to the final regular season match of the year when the Huskies return home to square off against Seton Hill University at Steph Pettit Stadium. Start time is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
