Field Hockey Clinches Final PSAC Postseason Spot After 5-1 Win Over Seton Hill

HTML BOX SCORE

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - Juniors Ali McKay (Dover, Del./Polytech) and Willow Perkins (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) each scored twice and senior Tali Wehner (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg) had three assists as the Bloomsburg University field hockey team posted a 5-1 victory over visiting Seton Hill University on a cold and blustery Saturday afternoon at Steph Pettit Stadium. With the victory, the Huskies clinched the sixth, and final, postseason spot for the upcoming Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) tournament which gets underway next week. Bloomsburg wrapped up the regular season with an 11-6 overall record and a 5-5 mark in league play. The Griffins concluded the year with an 0-18 overall record and an 0-10 mark in conference action.

Bloomsburg improved to 15-0 lifetime against Seton Hill in the all-time series. It will be the Huskies' eighth postseason appearance in nine years under head coach Nikki Hartranft.

Seton Hill, which had scored only five goals on the season entering the day, struck first as Zyah Newsome redirected a cross pass from Caitlin Bray past sophomore goalkeeper Dana Sheply (Maple Shade, N.J./Maple Shade) to give the visitors a 1-0 lead just 11:30 into the contest. The Huskies, however, were able to tie the contest at 1-1 when Ali McKay (Dover, Del./Polytech) scored her first of the game and third of the season off of a corner in the 22nd minute. Wehner picked up her first of three assists on the afternoon on the tying goal.

Bloomsburg exploded for four second-half goals to break the game open. Ali McKay (Dover, Del./Polytech) gave the Huskies their first lead of the afternoon when she scored her second of the game and fourth of the season just 7:31 into the second half off of an assist from senior Jackie Shragher (Holland, Pa./Council Rock South). The assist by Shragher was her first point of the season and her first point since recording an assist against Adelphi on September 2, 2016.

Perkins scored a minute later to extend the advantage to 3-1 with her four goal of the season as she drove into the circle and beat Seton Hill goalkeeper Elizabeth Armbruster on a breakaway opportunity. Freshman Madilyn McKay (Dover, Del./Polytech) ballooned the lead to 4-1 in the 61st minute when she buried a rebound past Armbruster for her second goal of the season. Wehner had the assist. Then, just over a minute later, Perkins finished off the scoring with her second goal of the game, and fifth of the season, when she slid a shot past backup netminder Lianna Caloviras off of a centering pass from Wehner.

Sheply played the first 55:52 of the contest and made two saves to improve to 7-5 overall on the season. Sophomore Hannah Barnard (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) relieved Sheply and did not face a shot in her 14:08 of action. Armbruster suffered the loss for the Griffins and was credited with six saves while allowing the first four goals. Caloviras saw one shot and allowed Perkins' second goal of the afternoon.

Bloomsburg outshot Seton Hill, 20-3, for the contest which included a 13-1 margin in the second half. The Huskies also had eight penalty corners to Seton Hill's two.

The Huskies' season will continue as they will head to Shippensburg University on Tuesday, November 13, for a PSAC quarterfinal match against the Raiders. In the only meeting between the two schools this season, Shippensburg earned a 2-0 win over Bloomsburg at Steph Pettit Stadium on October 20. Start time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
