Madeira's Hat Trick Lifts Men's Soccer To 4-1 Win Over Slippery Rock Saturday

HTML BOX SCORE

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - Junior Tyler Madeira (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland) continued his torrid scoring outburst by recording his first collegiate hat trick on Saturday afternoon to lift the Bloomsburg University men's soccer team to a 4-1 victory over visiting Slippery Rock University at Steph Pettit Stadium. The Huskies improved to 6-5 overall and 3-3 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) standings while The Rock dropped to 4-6-2 overall and 2-3-1 in league play. The Huskies moved into a tie for sixth place in the league standings with three weeks left in the regular season.

Over the last five contests, Madeira has seven goals and two assists for 16 points after the hat trick on Saturday. He scored four consecutive Bloomsburg goals in back-to-back 2-1 wins over West Chester and Daemen on September 23 and September 26. All told, the junior has eight goals and two assists for 18 points putting him third in the PSAC in both goals and points. Meanwhile, sophomore Carter Luckenbaugh (York, Pa./Central York) notched three assists on Saturday afternoon to give him a PSAC-leading six helpers on the year. He led the league in assists with 11 as a freshman a season ago.

Madeira became the first Bloomsburg player to record a hat trick in a game since Karl Lohninger scored three times in a 9-1 win over Bloomfield College on October 18, 2003. Those were the only goals Lohninger scored all season.

Junior Bawe Salehi (Alingsas, Sweden/Alstromer Gymnasiet) got the Huskies on the board when he drilled a shot into the top left corner from 30 yards out past Slippery Rock goalkeeper Matt Hunsberger in the 20th minute. Salehi's first goal in a Bloomsburg uniform was assisted by Luckenbaugh. Then, in the 33rd minute, Madeira extended the lead to 2-0 when he scored his first goal of the afternoon off of an assist from Luckenbaugh.

Slippery Rock answered when Devin Hoffman scored in the 41st minute off of an assist from Omar Bangura to cut the Huskies' lead to 2-1. Madeira did the rest, scoring an unassisted goal in the 70th minute to recapture the two-goal lead and then finishing off his first career hat trick in the 79th minute off the third assist of the day from Luckenbaugh.

Bloomsburg held a 16-12 advantage in shots while corner kicks were even at five apiece. Sophomore Brock Gould (York, Pa./Red Lion) improved to 4-2 on the season as he turned aside four shots in the victory. Hunsberger was credited with four saves as he saw his record drop to 4-6-2 on the year.

The Huskies will return to action on Tuesday, October 9, when they head to Lakewood, New Jersey, to battle Georgian Court University in a non-conference contest. Start time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
