INDIANA, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the 2018-19 campaign on Wednesday night as it fell at fifth-ranked Indiana University of Pennsylvania, 73-46, at the Kovalchick Center. The Huskies dropped to 2-1 overall on the young season while the Crimson Hawks improved to 3-0.
Sophomore
Emma Saxton (York, Pa./Central York) was the only Huskies' player in double figures as she finished with 13 points to go along with four rebounds and three assists. Senior
Marissa Molnar (Erie, Pa./McDowell) added nine points - all coming on three-pointers - while junior
Bella Ricci (Etters, Pa./Red Land) also chipped in with nine points, four rebounds, and three assists. Sophomore
Darcy Lee (Altoona, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle) led the Huskies with six rebounds to go along with six points in 23 minutes off the bench.
Bloomsburg led for roughly two minutes in the first quarter after senior
Alyssa Mack (Walnutport, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) nailed a three-pointer and Saxton added a layup for a mini 5-0 spurt after the Crimson Hawks had scored the opening basket. However, back-to-back layups from IUP's Carolyn Appleby and Lauren Wolosik gave the Crimson Hawks a 6-5 lead with 7:13 left in the opening quarter and the hosts never trailed from that point. IUP went on to outscore the Huskies, 33-10, the remainder of the first half to build up a 39-15 halftime advantage.
The Huskies had an excellent third quarter as they outscored the Crimson Hawks by an 18-11 margin during the ten-minute period. All six of Lee's points came on back-to-back triples midway through the quarter with Ricci following with a layup to cut the IUP lead to 45-31 with three minutes left in the third. However, the Huskies could get no closer as the early damage proved to be too much to overcome.
Bloomsburg shot 18-of-50 from the field (36.0%) for the contest and hit 7-of-22 (31.8%) from beyond the arc. However, the Huskies managed to knock down only 3-of-8 (37.5%) from the foul line on the night. IUP, meanwhile, shot 29-of-63 (46.0%) from the field and 4-of-12 (33.3%) from long distance. The Crimson Hawks were 11-of-16 (68.8%) from the charity stripe. IUP also held a significant advantage on the glass as it out-rebounded the Huskies, 43-25, with 15 of those coming on the offensive end.
Bloomsburg was also plagued with some early foul trouble as junior
Taylor Montana (Berwick, Pa./Berwick), the reigning PSAC East Athlete of the Week, was limited to just 13 minutes while Mack, the Huskies' leading scorer through the first two games, played only 21 minutes on the night. The duo combined for eight points and four rebounds.
The Crimson Hawks had three players in double figures with Appleby leading the way with 23 points. Maura D'Anna scored 18 points in 23 minutes off the bench while Wolosik chipped in 12 points, four rebounds, and five assists.
Bloomsburg will play its first home game of the season on Saturday, November 17, when it hosts Pitt-Johnstown at the Nelson Field House in a non-conference matchup. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
