CALIFORNIA, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University men's basketball team dropped its third consecutive decision on Tuesday afternoon after suffering a 102-70 setback at California University of Pennsylvania. The Huskies fell to 3-5 overall and 1-3 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division while the Vulcans improved to 3-6 overall and 1-2 in the PSAC Western Division.
Sophomore
Ethan Houston (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) was a bright spot for the Huskies as he collected his first collegiate double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds in just 19 minutes off the bench. He was 8-of-13 from the field and made his only foul shot attempt of the day. Six of his 12 rebounds came on the offensive glass. Houston came into the game averaging 3.3 points and 3.4 rebounds in the first seven games of the year but broke out in a big way on Tuesday.
Junior
Ky Mauras (Reading, Pa./Reading) added 16 points and four steals while freshman
Travis Elmore (Tobyhanna, Pa./Pocono Mountain West) finished with 14 points to extend his streak of reaching double figures in scoring. He has now hit double digits in each of his first eight collegiate contests.
California jumped out to a 55-33 advantage at halftime as it shot 61.3% (19-of-31) from the field in the opening 20 minutes. The Vulcans continued their torrid shooting as they went 17-of-30 (56.7%) in the second half as they outscored the Huskies, 47-37, over the final 20 minutes of regulation.
The Vulcans had five players in double figures led by Brent Pegram who scored 31 points, grabbed eight rebounds, and had five steals. He was 9-of-16 from the field and connected on 5-of-10 from beyond the arc. Donte' Williams finished with 19 points while Jermaine Hall Jr. added 18 points and 12 rebounds.Â
The hosts led from wire-to-wire as they jumped out to a 13-0 lead before Mauras got the Huskies on the board with 15:41 left in the opening half.
Bloomsburg shot 31-of-78 (39.7%) from the field but continued to struggle from both three-point range and the free throw line. The Huskies made only 3-of-25 (12.0%) from beyond the arc with freshman
William Melson (Allentown, Pa./Dieruff)Â going 2-of-4 to finish with six points. Bloomsburg was also just 5-of-12 (41.7%) from the foul line. California, meanwhile, finished 36-of-61 (59.0%) from the field, 13-of-22 (59.1%) from deep, and 17-of-19 (89.5%) from the charity stripe.
Both teams had 39 rebounds on the afternoon with the Huskies collecting 23 offensive boards. Both teams also had 15 turnovers but the Huskies had just eight assists while the Vulcans had 25 dimes.
Bloomsburg will get right back to work on Wednesday night when it heads to Slippery Rock University. Tip-off from the Morrow Field House is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
