Game Two Box Score

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Bloomsburg University softball team posted two wins on the final day of the Coker Spring Tournament on Sunday (Feb. 25), beating Charleston 14-8 and Fairmont State 4-3.

Charleston would strike first for two runs in the bottom of the first, when a two-run dinger off the bat of Haleigh Christopher scored Siarra Harrington. The Huskies responded for five runs in the top of the second, which began with a double to left field by Marissa Shelhamer (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia). After Shelhamer advanced to third on a groundout, Ashli Venokur (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick) continued her hot start with a RBI single to left to get the Huskies on the board. After a single from Abbey Remley (Berwick, Pa./Berwick Area) and a fielder's choice that retired Venokur, Maggie Hall (Cooperstown, N.Y./Cooperstown) roped a double to left field to score both Taylor Winkelman (Springfield, Pa/Springfield) and Remley to get the Huskies up 3-2. After Charleston made a pitching change taking out Jessie Rowe in favor of Carlee Lucas, Emily Mayhew (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) welcomed the new pitcher with a two-run bomb to left to score Hall. Charleston responded to knot the game at five-apiece with three runs in the bottom of the second, thanks to a RBI-double from Shelby Ume, a RBI-triple from Janie Schmidt and a sacrifice fly from Harrington. Each team would score once in the third, with Bloomsburg getting a leadoff walk from Hall. Advancing to second on a fielder's choice and to third on Venokur's second single of the game, Hall would score on another fielder's choice by Remley. In Charleston's half, Christopher drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a single by Kendall Marshall. Christopher was lifted for a pinch runner, before Emily Dutton poked a single to right field to score the third run for the Golden Eagles.

Bloomsburg would score three times in the fourth, and Charleston would get two runs in their half of the inning. It would be the last inning in the game that Charleston would score. Another leadoff walk started the inning for BU, this time by Hall. After Mayhew poked a single down the left field line to move Hall up 60 feet, Kalynn Wheeland (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport) did the rest with a three-run homer to right. After a leadoff walk issued to Karli Pinkerton, Harrington replaced her on first base reaching on a fielder's choice. After another walk moved Harrington to second, Abby Wild (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) recorded a strikeout for the second out of the inning. Back-to-back RBI singles by Rachel Roush and Marshall plated the final two runs for the Golden Eagles. Freshman Abby Wild (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) would limit Charleston to just three hits in the final three innings.

Altogether, the Huskies pounded out their 14 runs on 16 hits and were aided by two Charleston errors. Bloomsburg themselves committed three errors in the contest. Hall, Venokur and Remley each went 3-4 in the game, totaling six RBI and six runs scored. Mayhew and Wheeland each tallied two hits in the win, while Wheeland notched four RBI and Mayhew drove in two. Wild (2-0) picked up her second win of the year, firing five innings in relief of starter Alyssa Davies (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood). Wild allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits while walking three and striking out six. Davies tossed two innings to start, allowing five earned runs on six hits while firing four strikeouts.

The Huskies scored four runs on nine hits and took advantage of four Fairmont State errors in the second game while committing one themselves. Fairmont State would strike twice in the top of the first, when Andie Baughman drew a one-out walk and was scored on a two-run blast by Beth Cook. Bloomsburg would score twice in each of the second and third innings, while only surrendering Fairmont State's other run in the fifth. The home half second inning began with back-to-back doubles from Emily Getz (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) and Venokur, before Hall would lash a two-out double to left center to score Venokur from second. The third inning for Bloomsburg started the same way as the second with a leadoff double down the left field line by Mayhew. Wheeland ripped a single to left to score Mayhew, while advancing to second on the throw home. Wheeland would advance to third on the second out of the inning, a pop up on the right side of the infield by Shelhamer. Venokur would drive home the deciding run with a RBI single to left. Fairmont State would score their run in the fifth on a solo shot from Jenny Stubs.

Wheeland went a game-high 3-3 in the second game, with a RBI and a run scored. Venokur collected another multi-hit game, while Hall, Mayhew, Shelhamer and Getz each recorded one hit in the win. Wild (2-0) collected her second win in the circle in 4.1 innings, giving up three earned runs on three hits while issuing four free passes and punching out five. Tara Baney (Howard, Pa./Bellefonte) earned the save (2) in 2.2 innings of relief, working a clean appearance while striking out one.

The sweep of the day moves Bloomsburg to 3-1 on the season, while Fairmont State falls to 0-4.

The Huskies will hit the diamond again on Mar. 10 when they travel to Salem, Va. For the regional crossover tournament hosted by West Virginia Wesleyan. They will play Wheeling Jesuit at 10:00 a.m. and Chowan at 12:00 p.m.
