SALEM, Va. – The Bloomsburg University softball team went 1-2 against regional competition on Saturday (Mar. 10) at the James I. Moyer Sports Complex in Salem, Va. The Huskies took the first game of the day over Wheeling Jesuit 12-3 in five innings, before falling to Chowan 8-4 in the second game. They ended the day with a 9-1 loss to West Virginia Wesleyan.
The Huskies struck early and often against Wheeling Jesuit, scoring three times in the bottom of the first to start things off. The inning began with a double from
Taylor Winkelman (Springfield, Pa/Springfield), before
Maggie Hall (Cooperstown, N.Y./Cooperstown) laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Winkelman to third.
Emily Mayhew (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) reached on an error by the second baseman that Winkelman scored on, before
Kalynn Wheeland (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport) moved Mayhew up 60 feet with a single up the middle. Ashlie Venokur reached on an error by the right fielder that scored Mayhew and moved Wheeland to third. After the second out was recorded,
Marissa Shelhamer (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) scored Wheeland on a RBI single to left. The Cardinals scored once in both the third and fourth innings, before Bloomsburg put two more on the board in the third and put the game away with seven runs in the fourth. In the third, it was a two-RBI double from Shelhamer that scored Venokur and Wheeland. It was three straight RBI singles from Wheeland, Venokur and
Bridget Casey (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge), before a grand slam by
Alexa Erney (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) put the game out of reach.
The Huskies scored 12 runs on 14 hits, while committing three errors in the win. Wheeland led the Huskies with three hits, while four others collected two hits apiece. Hall and Erney each had one hit in the win, while Erney's four RBI were a game-high. Shelhamer drove in three runs, while three others drove in one apiece. Four Huskies each scored two runs in the win, while another four each scored once.
Alyssa Davies (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood) (2-0) got the win in the circle, allowing two earned runs on five hits in three innings while issuing one walk.
Tara Baney (Howard, Pa./Bellefonte) tossed two innings in relief allowing one unearned run on one hit while allowing one walk.
Chowan broke the scoring in the bottom of the first with Kris Neal scoring on a passed ball with Haley Cooper drawing a walk on the play. Beth Walker followed it up with a two-run dinger that scored Cooper, and the Hawks went up 3-0. The Huskies would score twice in the third inning, beginning with a single and a steal of second by
Taylor Winkelman (Springfield, Pa/Springfield).

Kalynn Wheeland (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport) doubled to left center to put runners at second and third with one out. The second out was recorded, before
Emily Getz (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) would reach on an error by the Chowan shortstop to score Mayhew unearned. The Hawks would counter with five runs in their half of the third to take an 8-2 lead. The Huskies would score once in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Ashlie Venokur that scored Mayhew and once in the seventh on Venokur's first home run of the season.
The Huskies scored their four runs on 11 total hits, while committing two errors. Mayhew, Wheeland and
Nicolette Ray (Abington, Pa./Abington) each recorded two hits in the loss, while five others contributed one hit each. Mayhew and Venokur collected the RBI in the game, while Mayhew scored twice and Winkelman and Venokur each scored one run.
Abby Wild (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) (2-1) took the loss against Chowan in two innings allowing three earned runs on two hits while walking two and striking out one.
Tara Baney (Howard, Pa./Bellefonte) tossed four innings in relief allowing five runs, two earned on six hits along with three walks and four strikeouts.Â
The Huskies then dropped their final game of the day to West Virginia Wesleyan. The Bobcats scored once in the third, twice in the fourth and once in the fifth before piling on five runs in the top of the seventh. The Huskies were held scoreless until the sixth when a sacrifice fly from Wheeland scored Hall.
Hall paced the offense with two hits in the loss, while five others recorded one hit apiece. Davies (2-1) got hung with the loss, allowing three earned runs on five hits in 3.1 innings. She notched one strikeout in the effort.
Erin Smith (Tunkhannock, Pa./Tunkhannock Area) and Wild also made relief appearances in the contest.
After today, the Huskies move to 4-3 on the season.
They will continue the trek south to Clermont, Fla. for the PFX tournament that begins on Tuesday (Mar. 13). They will take on Southern New Hampshire at 9:00 a.m. and Rollins at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday. Â
