CLERMONT, Fla. – The Bloomsburg University softball team split its first two games of the Florida PFX tournament on Tuesday (Mar. 13), dropping game one to Southern New Hampshire 8-6 in 10 innings before rebounding to shut out Rollins 8-0 in five innings.

In game one, the Huskies took a 2-0 lead on Kalynn Wheeland (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport)'s second homer of the season that also scored Taylor Winkelman (Springfield, Pa/Springfield). Southern New Hampshire would get one run back in the second on a sacrifice fly from Emily Critch that scored Shay Sauvageau. After a scoreless third inning, Emily Mayhew (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) launched her second homer of the season to put BU up by two in the fourth. The Penmen would get one run back in the fifth on a RBI single from Erin Tyrell to score Jordan Wade, before they tied the game at three in the sixth on a Katie Horiuchi single that scored Coralie Mathieu. In the bottom of the sixth, Mayhew bombed her second dinger of the game to put Bloomsburg up 4-3. The Penmen would tie the game and then some in the seventh, when Sarah Lavallee went deep to put SNHU up 5-4. In Bloomsburg's half of the seventh, Lindsey Nemeth led off with a pinch-hit single in place of Alexa Erney (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley). Erney was re-inserted into the game to run at first base, and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Bridget Casey (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge). After the second out was recorded with Erney still at second, it was Winkelman coming up with the clutch RBI single to tie the game yet again. In the top of the eighth, a Horiuchi single that scored Jackie Gavin put Southern New Hampshire in the lead yet again going to the bottom of the eighth. As per the international tiebreaker, Maggie Hall (Cooperstown, N.Y./Cooperstown) began the inning on second. Mayhew knocked a single that moved Hall to third, before Wheeland laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Mayhew to second. It was on the next play that Hall would score on a passed ball to tie the game at six. The Huskies had a chance after that to end it as the passed ball moved Mayhew to third with just one out, but they were unable to cash in. The Penmen went three up three down in their half of the ninth, as did the Huskies. Bloomsburg was able to advance Marissa Shelhamer (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) to third with a sacrifice from Erney, but they were unable to advance her 60 feet further. Southern New Hampshire would score twice in the top of the 10th, with both of the runs going unearned.

Bloomsburg scored their six runs on nine hits while committing two errors. Mayhew finished the game three for five with two long balls, while Wheeland was two for three and Winkelman was two for five. Mayhew and Wheeland each drove in two, while Wikelman drove in one. Mayhew scored twice, while four others scored once. Tara Baney (Howard, Pa./Bellefonte) (0-1) took her first loss in the circle, throwing three innings of relief allowing three hits and three unearned runs. Baney also struck out two in the loss. Wild got the start for the Huskies, allowing five runs on 10 hits through seven innings. She walked and struck out two apiece.

The Huskies were able to rebound and shut out Rollins for a mercy rule win. Bloomsburg scored three runs in the first, one in the third and four in the fifth to put the win on ice. Wheeland launched her third bleacher creature of the season in the first that scored Hall and Winkelman, and Nicolette Ray (Abington, Pa./Abington) notched a RBI single that scored Mayhew in the third. Baney would deliver the big blow at the plate in the fifth with the first grand slam of her college career, scoring Ray, Emily Getz (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) and Wheeland. BU scored eight runs on 11 hits while committing two errors in the win. Abby Remley was a perfect three for three with a double, while Wheeland had two hits and six others chipped in one. Baney collected her game-high four RBI with one swing, while Wheeland drove in three and Ray brought home one. Wheeland scored twice, while six others crossed the place once. Baney (1-1) went the distance in the circle for her first collegiate win, allowing just two hits and one walk while punching out four through five innings.

The Huskies will be back in action tomorrow (Wednesday, Mar. 14) when they take on Post University at 9:00 a.m. and Slippery Rock at 11:30 a.m. Both games will be played at the NTC Softball Complex.
