WILMINGTON, DEL. – The Bloomsburg University women's lacrosse team began its 2018 season with a convincing 22-8 win at Wilmington (Del.) on Thursday (Mar. 1).
The game began with Wilmington's La'Dae Boykin scoring the first goal just 1:17 in, before Bloomsburg would counter with three in a row. A goal from
Erin Boulger (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville Area) and two from Syndey Collins came in a span of 1:36, LaShay Ross and Boykin would score for the Wildcats to tie the game at three six minutes in, before Bloomsburg went on another run. Collins,
Danielle Ward (Albrightsville, Pa./Vernon Township) and
Taylor Turner (Corning, N.Y./Corning West) scored in 2:28 to get the Huskies up 6-3 a little over nine minutes into the game. Wilmington would get two more goals back from Boykin and Ross to get back within one, before Bloomsburg would score the next five in under five minutes.
Lindsey Coyle (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West), Turner,
Cailyn Gormley (Springfield, Pa./Springfield), Boulger and
Hannah Jaskuta (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown Area) would net goals to put Bloomsburg up 11-5 with 16:31 to play in the half. Mariah Spencer and Ross would get two more on the board for the Wildcats, before the Huskies scored six goals in just under six minutes.
Megan Smith (Lake Hopatcong, N.J./Jefferson Township) and
Grace Kelleher (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) started the run for BU, before Jaskuta and Kelleher each netted their second of the game.
Anna Dempsey (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts), Collins and
Abby Bergman (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) would wrap up the run to send the teams to the half with Bloomsburg up 18-7 after 30 minutes.
Wilmington opened the second half much like they did the first by getting the first goal. Boykin scored just 20 seconds into the second half before the Huskies would hold the Wildcats scoreless for the rest of the afternoon. Turner scored twice in the second half, while Gormley and Smith each netted their second of the game.
Bloomsburg out-shot Wilmington 36-16 on the day, including a 31-12 advantage in shots on goal. Both teams were 3-6 on free position attempts, while Wilmington won 19 draw controls to BU's 13. The Huskies collected 24 ground balls to Wilmington's 10, and also caused 15 turnovers while Wilmington caused only five. On the day, Collins and Turner each found the back of the net four times, while Collins also dished out a team-high four assists. Collins tied her career-high for goals which she set in last year's 18-1 win over Wilmington on Mar. 9, 2017. The sophomore's four assists also set a new career-high. Smith, Boulger, Kelleher, Gormley and Jaskuta each scored twice, with Kelleher totaling three assists and Smith tallying one. Dempsey, Coyle, Bergman and Ward each scored once in the win, with Dempsey and Bergman recording two assists and Coyle registering one.
Tiffany Diachynsky (Barto, Pa./Boyertown Area) scooped up a team-high four ground balls on the afternoon, while five others picked up two apiece and another seven players each collected one. Diachynsky also led the team in caused turnovers with four while Turner,
Erika Biehl (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) and
Allison Bardman (Barto, Pa./Boyertown Area) each caused two turnovers. Four others caused one turnover apiece.
Angela DiPasquale (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) (1-0) got her first win of the season between the pipes, making four saves.
The Huskies are 1-0 to start 2018, while the Wildcats fall to 0-3 with the loss.
Bloomsburg will hit the road again on Saturday (Mar. 3) to take on Jefferson in a non-conference contest. Opening draw is set for 12:00 p.m.
