BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg University women's lacrosse team dropped a 15-14 heartbreaker to visiting Saint Anselm at Steph Pettit Stadium on Friday (Mar. 9).
Emma Palumbo began the scoring just 1:06 in off an assist from Erica Mattila, before
Grace Kelleher (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) would tie the game just over three minutes in with her third of the season on a free position shot. The Huskies would go up 3-1 on goals from
Anna Dempsey (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) (25:45) and
Tracy Rusen (Martinsville, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) (24:43), before Palumbo would score again off an assist from Meghan Sheehy at 23:32. After Rusen's second goal of the half at 16:20 to put Bloomsburg up 4-2, the Hawks scored the next seven goals including the first goal of the second half at 26:49. Goals from Breda Holland (13:44), Molly Beck (8:21), Palumbo (7:08), Sheehy (6:42), Mattila (5:47) and Sheehy again (4:29) sent the Hawks on a run to close out the first half. Saint Anselm went to the locker room with an 8-4 lead.
The run continued for the first 3:11 of the second half, when Beck would score unassisted to stretch the Hawks lead to five. Kelleher scored her second of the game from
Taylor Turner (Corning, N.Y./Corning West) to get Bloomsburg back within four, before Palumbo scored again from Sheehy to put the Hawks up 10-5 at 24:33 of the second half. Bloomsburg would get the next two goals just 1:52 apart, first from
Cailyn Gormley (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) unassisted and then
Abby Bergman (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) scored her second of the year from
Sydney Collins (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) to make it a 10-7 game with 21 minutes to play. The Hawks stretched their lead to five with two goals in 56 seconds, the first was Palumbo off an assist from Marta Versprille followed by Hollad from Matilla to make it 12-7 with 16:49 left in the second half. Bloomsburg would score the next five goals to tie the game at 12 over a span of 11:17.
Erin Boulger (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville Area) (16:05) and
Hannah Jaskuta (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown Area) (14:32) scored free position shots, before Turner scored unassisted with 9:52 left. The final two goals were 17 seconds apart from Kelleher (6:05) with an assist from Turner and then Boulger from Kelleher (5:48) to tie the game at 12. Saint Anselm responded with two goals 90 seconds apart when Holland scored from Mattila (4:41) and then Matilla scored unassisted (3:11) to put the Hawks up 14-12. Rusen would net the hat trick with her third of the game coming on a free position attempt with 2:49 left, before Jaskuta's second of the game from Kelleher knotted the game at 14 with 56 seconds left. Saint Anselm would hold for one final possession and draw a late free position attempt for Sheehy. Sheehy buried her hat trick goal with nine seconds to play to give the Hawks the road victory.
Rusen and Kelleher each tallied hat tricks in the contest, while Boulger and Jaskuta each scored twice. Bergman, Gormley and Dempsey each tallied one goal in the loss. Bloomsburg out-worked Saint Anselm for ground balls 33-30, with five Huskies collecting four apiece.
Erika Biehl (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) scooped up three in the contest, while four others recorded two each. Boulger and
Lana Paulo (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township) each grabbed one ground ball in the game. The Huskies got beat 19-13 on draw controls, with Turner totaling a team-high seven. Bloomsburg totaled 15 clears to Saint Anselm's 12, while also holding Saint Anselm to 1-5 on free position attempts. The Huskies, meanwhile were 5-7 on free position attempts. The Huskies caused 27 turnovers on the afternoon, with
Abby Nocito (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) causing a game-high five. Turner and
Tiffany Diachynsky (Barto, Pa./Boyertown Area) each caused four, while
Delaney Schappert (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) caused two and eight others created one apiece.
Angela DiPasquale (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) (1-1) took the loss between the pipes, making 15 saves.
The Huskies are on the road for their next game on Wednesday (Mar. 14) when they travel to Roberts Wesleyan for a non-conference contest. Opening draw is set for 4:00 p.m.
