ROCHESTER, N.Y. – It took a late effort and some stellar play between the pipes, but the Bloomsburg University women's lacrosse team came back from a second half deficit to defeat Roberts Wesleyan 14-13 in double overtime on Wednesday (Mar. 14).
Roberts Wesleyan began the scoring just 1:48 in with an unassisted goal from Jessica Giancursio, before the Huskies would score the next six goals over the next 17 minutes.
Kirsten Wozniak (Oradell, N.J./River Dell Regional) began the run off an assist from
Sydney Collins (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill), before
Erin Boulger (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville Area) found
Cailyn Gormley (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) for a goal just 1:39 later. Collins would set up Dempsey for the third goal with 18:29 to play in the half, before
Grace Kelleher (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) scored unassisted with just over 16 minutes to play in the half. With 14:05 to play in the half, it was Gormley again from Boulger, before
Anna Dempsey (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) set up Kelleher for her second of the game with 11 minutes and change to play in the half. The Redhawks would get the next three goals, including two from Emily Tomei 17 seconds apart. The clock ticked down inside five minutes remaining in the first half, before Taylor Nathan scored Roberts Wesleyan's fourth goal of the game with 4:12 left in the half. An unassisted goal from
Lindsey Coyle (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) with 3:39 left in the half would be the final goal of the first, sending the teams to the break with Bloomsburg leading 7-4.
In the second half, Giancursio and Johannah Price would get things started for the Redhawks with back-to-back goals in 1:48 to cut the BU lead to just one. Gormley would tally her hat trick goal unassisted less than three minutes in, before Nathan scored two in a row 1:15 apart to tie the game at eight. Another goal from Price with 18:23 left in the half put Roberts Wesleyan up 9-8. Another goal from Tomei followed up by an unassisted marker by Megan Burnham put the Redhawks up 11-8 with 13:07 to play. As the clock ticked down into the final 10 minutes, Kelleher and Burnham would trade goals along with exchanges from Emily Knight and Gormley that left Roberts Wesleyan up 13-10 with under six minutes to play. Along with Gormley's goal, markers from
Abby Bergman (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) (5:35), Kelleher (1:39) and
Taylor Turner (Corning, N.Y./Corning West) (1:13) knotted the game at 13. Four unanswered goals in the final six minutes by the Huskies sent the game to overtime.
The teams played three minutes of extra time with
Angela DiPasquale (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) coming up with four big saves in the period, including one on a free position shot. The first two minutes of the second overtime were calm, until Kelleher got a chance with 56 seconds left and cashed it home.
Bloomsburg out-shot Roberts Wesleyan 33-28 in the contest, including 29-25 in shots on goal. Kelleher's five goals were a game-high, while Gormley netted four in the win. Five other Huskies scored in the win. Boulger and Collins each dished out two assists, while Kelleher and Dempsey each had one. Bloomsburg collected 29 ground balls as a team, with
Tracy Rusen (Martinsville, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) and
Abby Nocito (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) scooping up four each. Seven different Huskies grabbed two each, while another seven players registered one ground ball apiece. The Huskies caused six turnovers in the win, with six different players contributing. BU also won 14 draw controls in the game, with
Megan Smith (Lake Hopatcong, N.J./Jefferson Township) grabbing a game-high five. Dempsey collected three on the day, while Gormley and Turner each recorded two and Rusen and Boulger each registered one. DiPasquale (2-1) earned her second win in the cage by coming up big in the extra period, totaling 12 saves.
With the win, BU moves to 2-1 while Roberts Wesleyan is now 5-3.
The Huskies return home to Steph Pettit Stadium on Saturday (Mar. 17) when they welcome No. 21 Mercyhurst to open Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play. Opening draw is set for 1:00 p.m.
