BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg University women's lacrosse team dropped their Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) opener at home to No. 21 Mercyhurst 14-9 on Saturday (Mar. 17) at Steph Pettit Stadium.
The Lakers scored the first two goals in the first minute, with Taylor Izzo scoring from Lacey Netti 18 seconds in and Grace Lawson scoring from Izzo 38 seconds later.
Anna Dempsey (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) got the scoring started for BU with a free position goal for her fourth of the season, before
Tracy Rusen (Martinsville, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) scored her fourth of the season from
Lindsey Coyle (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) in a woman-up situation.
Taylor Turner (Corning, N.Y./Corning West) would score unassisted at 13:32 to put Bloomsburg up 3-2, before Kristin Anderson would tally an unassisted goal at 10:54 to tie the game at three-apiece. With nine minutes to play in the first half, Torie Sullivan scored from Netti to put the Lakers up 4-3. 42 seconds later,
Cailyn Gormley (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) scored her eighth of the season from Turner to knot the game at four-all. The teams went to the locker room tied at four.
Another woman-up goal from Rusen assisted by Turner would start the second half, before
Hannah Jaskuta (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown Area) scored from Gormley 2:31 into the half to put Bloomsburg up 6-4. Two Laker goals from Lawson and Anderson both assisted by Izzo tied the game at six, before Gormley and Angelina Simon traded unassisted markers to leave the game tied at seven-all with 13 minutes to play. Mercyhurst would out-score Bloomsburg 7-2 in the last 13 minutes beginning with back-to-back goals from Anderson, one assisted by Izzo and the other unassisted. Rusen tallied her third of the game assisted by Turner with 10 minutes to play to get Bloomsburg within one, before Mercyhurst took control and scored the next three. Goals from Anderson assisted by Izzo (9:41), Lawson assisted by Simon (9:34) and Simon from Izzo (9:08) put the Lakers up 12-8. Jaskuta would score from Coyle with 4:14 left, before Izzo would score from Simon at 2:21 and Anderson scored unassisted with 44 seconds left to cap off the victory for the 21
st-ranked Lakers.
Five Huskies scored in the loss, led by three from Rusen. Gormley and Jaskuta each scored twice, while Turner and Dempsey each tallied one goal. Bloomsburg collected 31 ground balls to Mercyhurst's 29, with
Abby Nocito (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) grabbing a game-high seven.
Delaney Schappert (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) and
Erika Biehl (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) each picked up four, while
Angela DiPasquale (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) recorded three. Four others had two each, while another five players each scooped up one. Mercyhurst won the battle for draw controls 17-8, led by Turner and
Kirsten Wozniak (Oradell, N.J./River Dell Regional) with three each. Gormley and
Erin Boulger (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville Area) each grabbed one. The Huskies also caused 17 of Mercyhurst's 28 turnovers, with a team-high three from Schappert. Turner,
Tiffany Diachynsky (Barto, Pa./Boyertown Area) and Nocito each caused two, while eight others caused one turnover apiece in the loss. DiPasquale (2-2) took the loss in the cage, making 10 saves.
The Huskies return to the turf at Steph Pettit Stadium on Tuesday (Mar. 20) when they welcome Shippensburg for a PSAC contest. Opening draw is set for 4:00 p.m.
