BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg University women's lacrosse team once again showed their flare for the dramatic with a 17-16 double-overtime win over Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) rival Shippensburg on Tuesday (Mar. 20).
The Raiders scored the first goal 1:19 into the game on an unassisted marker from Alana Cardaci, before
Tracy Rusen (Martinsville, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) would score assisted by
Grace Kelleher (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) and
Lindsey Coyle (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) would score unassisted just 22 seconds apart to give Bloomsburg a 2-1 lead just over five minutes into the game. Shippensburg would score the next two with another unassisted goal from Cardaci and a goal from Morgan Stone assisted by Kami Holt. Closing in on the halfway point of the opening period,
Hannah Jaskuta (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown Area) would score her seventh of the season on a free position shot to tie the game at three. Shippensburg would score the next three all in a span of 33 seconds, coming from Allisan Fugate unassisted, Cardaci from Maddy Siejk and Siejk on a free position shot.
Kirsten Wozniak (Oradell, N.J./River Dell Regional) and Kyra Shank traded free position goals to keep Shippensburg at a three-goal advantage with 9:23 left in the first half, before Jaskuta assisted by
Sydney Collins (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) and Kelleher unassisted would get the Huskies back within one with under six minutes to play. A free position goal from Jena MacDonald regained Shippensburg's two-goal lead, before Jaskuta scored from Kelleher (4:12) and
Megan Smith (Lake Hopatcong, N.J./Jefferson Township) scored from Jaskuta (2:33) to tie the game at eight. The teams went to the locker room deadlocked.
Stone scored the first goal of the second half 29 seconds in from Cardaci, before Rusen knotted the game at nine from Jaskuta just 54 seconds in. Kelleher assisted by
Abby Nocito (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) and a free position goal from Maddy Newman locked the game at 10-all, before a free position goal from
Anna Dempsey (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) and Cardaci from Rene Morrow kept the game tied at 11. Bloomsburg was finally able to score two in a row, when
Cailyn Gormley (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) (18:37) scored on a free position attempt and Kelleher scored a woman-down goal unassisted with 14:43 left in the half. The Raiders would score the next three, with unassisted markers from Kathleen Mirgon (12:36), Stone (6:54) and Siejk (5:45) to take a 14-13 lead. Rusen would complete the hat trick from Wozniak with 4:22 to play, before Gormley scored from Kelleher to put the Huskies up 15-14 with 2:57 left in the half. Cardaci would score twice in the final two minutes assisted by MacDonald to put Shippensburg ahead 16-15, before Gormley's hat trick goal with 15 seconds left tied the game at 16-all.
In the first half of the overtime period, there were two shots from each team that were stonewalled by their respective goalkeepers. The Huskies would win the draw control and go on to control play in the second half of the overtime period, even forcing a Shippensburg turnover to keep the Raiders in the defensive end. After a Rusen shot was saved by Shippensburg goalie Kiki Brasher,
Abby Bergman (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) was on the doorstep to cash home her fourth of the season and get the win for the Huskies.
Bloomsburg out-shot Shippensburg 54-32 in the win, including a 7-2 advantage after regulation. Four Huskies tallied hat tricks in the win in Gormley, Rusen, Kelleher and Jaskuta, while Wozniak, Bergman, Dempsey, Smith and Coyle each scored once. Kelleher also dished out a game-high three assists in the win, while Jaskuta recorded two and three others assisted on one goal each. The Huskies edged the Raiders 38-19 in ground balls, led by nine from winning goalkeeper
Angela DiPasquale (Paramus, N.J./Paramus). Gormley collected five in the win, while Nocito picked up four. Bergman collected three while six others grabbed two and another five players each registered one. Bloomsburg collected 17 draw controls to Shippensburg's 19, with three Huskies each collecting three.
Taylor Turner (Corning, N.Y./Corning West) and Gormley each snatched two, while four others pulled down one in the win. BU caused 20 Shippensburg turnovers in the win, with
Delaney Schappert (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) causing a team-high four. Three others caused three-apiece, Kelleher caused two and five others each caused one. DiPasquale (3-2) made nine saves in the win.
The Huskies are in action again on Sunday (Mar. 25) when they travel to Millersville. Opening draw is set for 3:30 p.m.
