WILSON, N.C. - The Bloomsburg University baseball team used a seven-run second inning to knock off West Virginia State, 13-4, on Saturday at Fleming Stadium in Wilson, North Carolina. With the victory, the Huskies improved to 6-3 overall while the Yellow Jackets dropped to 6-4.
Bloomsburg broke the scoreless tie with seven runs on seven hits and an error in the top of the second inning. The Huskies had four doubles and three singles in the inning and used four consecutive hits to jump out to a 4-0 advantage.
Shane Woelfel (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah) jump-started the inning with a leadoff double to right field which was followed by a walk to
Ben Newbert (Bala Cynwyd, Pa./Harriton). Two batters later,
Chad Cooperman (Allentown, Pa./Salisbury) doubled to right which plated Woelfel for the first run of the inning.
Colton Hooker (Warrington, Pa./Upper Moreland) followed with a two-run double to right, scoring both Newbert and Cooperman, to extend the lead to 3-0.
Nate Krizan (Montoursville, Pa./Loyalsock Township) reached on an infield single and then
Cole Swiger (Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin) doubled to center to score Hooker, ending the afternoon for West Virginia State starter Kenneth Daniels.
It didn't get any better for the Yellow Jackets. After Ethan Lauchart retired the first batter he faced, he balked home Krizan as Bloomsburg built up a 5-0 lead.
Ryan Shiffer (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South) singled to plate Swiger and Woelfel singled for his second hit of the inning to advance Shiffer to third. An errant pickoff throw to first allowed Shiffer to scored the seventh run of the inning.
The Huskies added an unearned run in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI single from
Andrew Holmes (Egg Harbor Township, N.J./Egg Harbor Township) as Bloomsburg extended the lead to 8-0. He plated Newbert who had earlier reached on an error.
Ashton Raines (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) was the beneficiary of the offensive outburst. The righthander did not allow a hit until a one-out single in the bottom of the fourth inning and allowed only two hits through the first five innings.
However, the Yellow Jackets finally broke through in the bottom of the sixth when Ryan McDonough belted a one-out, three-run home run to left field to bring West Virginia State to within 8-3. Raines struck out the final two batters of the inning and then exited with an 8-3 advantage.
Bloomsburg ballooned the advantage to 12-3 with four more runs in the top of the seventh inning. The Huskies had just one hit in the frame but it was a big one as Shiffer cleared the bases with a three-run double with two outs. Two Yellow Jacket pitchers combined to walk four batters before Shiffer's double. Bloomsburg scored its first run of the inning when Holmes scampered home on a wild pitch.
West Virginia State answered with a solo home run by Andrew Stone with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning off of reliever
Wyatt Beakler (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon).
Krizan drove home the final run of the game with an RBI fielder's choice in the top of the eighth inning.
Brett Alaimo (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) came on and slammed the door on the Yellow Jackets as he pitched two scoreless innings. He allowed two hits in the bottom of the ninth but pitched around the jam.
Raines improved to 3-0 on the young season as he allowed three runs on five hits in six innings. He walked one and struck out three. Beakler pitched the seventh and allowed the solo home run to Stone. He walked one and struck out one. Alaimo allowed two hits in two innings without a walk or a strikeout.
Daniels suffered the loss for the Yellow Jackets as he allowed six earned runs on five hits in one and one-third innings. He walked one and struck out three.
The Huskies had a dozen hits on the day - two each from Swiger, Shiffer, Woelfel, Holmes, and Krizan. Shiffer drove in a game-high four runs, extending his team-lead to 14 RBI through nine games this season. Swiger, Newbert, Cooperman, and Krizan each scored twice in the victory.
Bloomsburg will take on the Vulcans of California University of Pennsylvania on Sunday night, March 11, at Fleming Stadium. Start time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
