Huskies Knock Off No. 20 Millersville 16-13 on Sunday

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Bloomsburg University women's lacrosse team upset No. 20 Millersville in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action on Sunday (Mar. 25) by a score of 16-13.

The Huskies led 8-7 at halftime after falling behind 3-0 early. Sabrina Fusco scored the first goal of the game four minutes in from Nathalie Sell, before Sarah Leverentz scored unassisted just over eight minutes in. Fusco would score a free position goal just over 10 minutes into the half to move Millersville's lead to 3-0 and force a Bloomsburg timeout. Cailyn Gormley (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) (18:37) assisted by Kirsten Wozniak (Oradell, N.J./River Dell Regional) and Tracy Rusen (Martinsville, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) (18:08) assisted by Abby Bergman (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) would get the Huskies back within one, before Fusco would net her third of the game on a free position goal with 16 and a half minutes to play in the half. Free position goals from Lindsey Coyle (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) (10:25) and Gormley (8:26) would knot the game at four, before Gillian Zimmerman would score assisted by Kristen Butzner to put Millersville back up 5-4. Grace Kelleher (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) would score unassisted to tie the game at five with 6:47 to play in the half, before Zimmerman would score a minute later to get Millersville back on top. Genevieve Speights would get in on the scoring with 5:13 left in the half to put the Marauders up by two, before BU would close out the half with three consecutive goals to take their lead to the break. Kelleher assisted by Gormley (3:52), Rusen assisted by Wozniak (3:14) and a free position goal from Hannah Jaskuta (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown Area) with 28 seconds left would send the Huskies to the half with a one-goal lead.

The first two minutes of the second half were a flurry of scoring. Rusen began the second half with her hat trick goal coming just 22 seconds in assisted by Kelleher, before Jaskuta scored her second of the game before the two-minute mark from Gormley. Jaskuta's goal was the first of three goals to come in a 31-second span. Erin Fagan would score for Millersville off an assist from Sara Burney, before Megan Smith (Lake Hopatcong, N.J./Jefferson Township) would get in on the scoring with a free position goal. Leverentz would score a free position goal just under six minutes in, before Rusen would net her fourth of the game on a free position attempt just 1:12 later. Speights would score to get the Marauders back within two, before another goal from Coyle would re-gain the three-goal lead for the Huskies with 22:32 to play in the second half. As the clock ticked down into the final 12 minutes, Erin Boulger (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville Area) got in on the scoring with an unassisted goal to move BU's lead to 14-10 with 11:25 left. Fusco (10:17) would trade a free position goal with Rusen's fifth of the game (7:59) being assisted by Kelleher to leave Bloomsburg's lead at 15-11. Jaskuta's hat trick goal on a free position attempt with 5:39 would stretch the lead to a game-high five for Bloomsburg, before Speights scored just 16 seconds later to tally a hat trick of her own. The last goal of the game came with 3:36 left from Leverentz to complete the hat trick.

Bloomsburg out-shot Millersville 32-30 in the win including a 22-21 edge in shots on goal. Rusen's five goals were a game and career-high, while Jaskuta recorded a hat trick in the win. Gormley, Kelleher and Coyle each scored twice, while Smith and Boulger each tallied one goal. Gormley, Kelleher and Wozniak each dished out two helpers in the contest, along with one from Bergman. Millersville had the slight 22-21 edge in ground balls, with winning goalie Angela DiPasquale (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) collecting a team-high five for Bloomsburg. Six Huskies scooped up two ground balls apiece in the win, while another four players each picked up one. Bloomsburg caused 15 of Millersville's 23 turnovers in the win, led by three from Delaney Schappert (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor). Four other Huskies each caused two turnovers on the day, while another four recorded one caused turnover each. Millersville won the battle for draw controls 16-14, with Smith pulling down a team-high five for BU. Danielle Ward (Albrightsville, Pa./Vernon Township) collected four on the afternoon, while Taylor Turner (Corning, N.Y./Corning West) and Bergman each grabbed two. Rusen also snatched one in the win. Between the pipes, DiPasquale (4-2) made eight saves in the win.

The win moves Bloomsburg to 4-2 and 2-1 in the PSAC, while Millersville moves to 5-2 and 1-2 in the conference.

The Huskies will be back in action on Wednesday (Mar. 28) when they travel to Seton Hill for a PSAC matchup with an anticipated start time of 4:00 p.m.
