STORYLINE
The Huskies are to begin play in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Central division this weekend, hosting Mansfield on Friday (Mar. 30) and playing on the road at Pitt-Johnstown on Saturday (Mar. 31).
ALL-TIME SERIES
This will be the 117
th and 118 all-time meetings between Bloomsburg and Mansfield. BU leads the all-time series 104-12.
This will be the fifth and sixth all-time meetings between Bloomsburg and Pitt-Johnstown. The Huskies hold a 4-0 edge in the series.
LAST MEETING
Bloomsburg and Mansfield split their last doubleheader at Mansfield back on Apr. 22, 2017, with Mansfield taking game one 5-3 and Bloomsburg winning game two 2-0. Mansfield began the scoring with three runs in the third inning, before padding their lead with another run in the bottom of the fourth. Mansfield would score one more time in the sixth, before a rally would fall short for Bloomsburg in the seventh. The Huskies plated three runs in the frame, but it was not enough.
Mallory Tomaschik (Catawissa, Pa./Southern Columbia) blaster a two-run homer that scored
Emily Mayhew (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge), before
Anna McElroy (Jessup, Pa./Valley View) grounded out and brought home
Maggie Hall (Cooperstown, N.Y./Cooperstown). The Huskies scored three runs on five hits while committing one error in the loss. Mayhew led the offense with two hits, while Tomaschik,
Holly Peacock (Williamsport, Pa./Jersey Shore) and
Kelsey Impink (Schwenksville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) each had one hit in the loss. Tomaschik drove in two runs while McElroy drove in the third run.
Taylor Parker (Dewart, Pa./Warrior Run) took the loss in the circle, allowing five runs on 12 hits through 5.1 innings. She also walked three and struck out two in the effort.
Alyssa Davies (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood) fired 0.2 innings of perfect relief in the game.
The Huskies got game two started early with a RBI double from the eventual winning pitcher Tomaschik that scored Mayhew in the first. The game was scoreless until the seventh when
Marissa Shelhamer (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) singled to left to score
Bridget Casey (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge). Five different Huskies notched hits in the win, with RBI coming from Tomaschik and Shelhamer. Tomaschik also collected the win in the circle, firing a complete game allowing six hits with two walks and seven punch-outs.
The Huskies wept Pitt-Johnstown in the last doubleheader between the two back on Apr. 28, 2017 at UPJ with a pair of 4-0 wins. Bloomsburg got game one started in the third inning with a home run by Casey, before before the Huskies would score twice in the sixth and once in the seventh. In the sixth,
Holly Peacock (Williamsport, Pa./Jersey Shore) singled to score Mayhew before
Natalie Quinlan (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby) singled home Parker. In the seventh, a RBI single from Mayhew scored
Julia Knight (Kennett Square, Pa./Unionville). The Huskies scored four runs on 10 hits while not committing an error in the game. Three Huskies had two hits each, while another four each contributed one hit. Mayhew, Peacock, Quinlan and Casey registered RBI in the game. Tomaschik earned the win in the circle, logging seven shutout innings while issuing two free passes and firing 11 strikeouts.
The Huskies got game two started with three runs in the first, starting with a Parker sacrifice fly that scored Mayhew. Shelhamer would drive in
Taylor Winkelman (Springfield, Pa/Springfield) with a single, followed up by a RBI single from Casey that scored Shelhamer later in the inning. The game would remain 3-0 until the sixth, when Lindsey Nemeth singled to bring home Shelhamer for a second time. Shelhamer was the lone Husky with two hits in the win, while four others recorded one hit each. Four different Huskies also drove in a run in the game. Parker picked up the win in the circle, firing a complete-game shutout allowing four hits and recording one strikeout.
LAST TIME OUT
The Huskies swept East Stroudsburg at home on Monday (Mar. 26) in a pair of one-run games, winning game one 4-3 and game two 6-5.
Bloomsburg scored twice in the top of the first, starting with
Maggie Hall (Cooperstown, N.Y./Cooperstown)'s first home run of the season and later in the inning with a RBI double from
Kalynn Wheeland (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport) that scored Mayhew. East Stroudsburg was able to get one run in the second on an error in the infield, before Bloomsburg would pad its lead with two more runs in the bottom of the third.
Tara Baney (Howard, Pa./Bellefonte) would launch her first career homer to score Mayhew for a second time in the game. Trailing 4-1 in the seventh, the Warriors were able to plate two runs and get more runners in position to score on a costly Bloomsburg error in the seventh. Eventual winning pitcher Baney would shut the door to preserve the win. The Huskies scored their four runs on eight hits while committing five errors in the win. Mayhew and Baney each had two hits in the win, while four others had one hit apiece. Baney drove in two runs, while Hall and Wheeland each drove in one. Mayhew would score twice, while Hall and Baney would each score once. Baney (2-3) got the win in the circle, allowing three unearned runs on five hits while walking two and striking out four.
Bloomsburg got game two started in a big way with four runs in the bottom of the first. A RBI single from Mayhew to score Winkelman followed by a two-RBI single from Wheeland that scored Mayhew and Hall put the Huskies up 3-0, before a RBI single from
Nicolette Ray (Abington, Pa./Abington) scored
Erin Smith (Tunkhannock, Pa./Tunkhannock Area). East Stroudsburg got one run in the second on a RBI double by Sofia Cecchin, before Bloomsburg struck for two more runs in the fourth. A RBI single from Mayhew to score Winkelman yet again was folloed up by two errors by East Stroudsburg's infield that allowed Mayhew to come around and score. The Warriors would get within one with four runs in the top of the fifth.
Abby Wild (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) would come on in relief to shut the door and preserve the win.
Bloomsburg scored their six runs on 10 hits while committing one error in the win. Mayhew paced the offense in game two with a 3-4 day, including two RBI and two runs scored. Winkelman notched two hits and two runs in the outing, while another five Huskies each recorded one hit in game two. Wheeland also drove in two runs, along with one RBI from Ray. Davies (3-3) earned the win in the circle, allowing five runs on seven hits with one free pass and one punch-out. Wild collected her first career save with two innings of scoreless relief, allowing two hits.
Mansfield's last game action came on Mar. 10 when they defeated Shaw 12-7 and lost to Virginia State 9-1. In the first game, Shaw scored two runs in the top of the first before Mansfield scored three runs in the bottom of the first. A RBI single from Rachael Sterner to score Alli McGovern was followed up later in the inning by a two-RBI single from Leah McGovern that scored Sterner and Koryn Wickwire. Mansfield would add three more runs in the second on back-to-back RBI doubles from Wickwire and Sterner, before Sterner scored on a RBI single by Anastasia Hester. Mansfield would go on to score once in the third, twice in the fourth, once in the fifth and two in the sixth in the win. Pearce led the offense with a 4-4 day, while Sterner and Melanie Taylor each had three hits in the game. Four different Mountaineers had two hits apiece in the win, while another three each had one. Sterner drove in a game-high three runs, while Joelle Snyder and Leah McGovern each drove in two and five others each drove in one. Sierra Storm collected the win in the circle allowing four runs, three earned on nine hits in five innings along with allowing one walk. Brooke Roys also tossed 0.2 innings of relief giving up three runs, two earned on one hit with two walks and one strikeout. Arianna Young closed out the game with 1.1 innings of hitless relief with one strikeout.
The second game was scoreless until Virginia State scored twice in the third and three times in the fourth to take a 5-0 lead. Mansfield's lone run came on a RBI triple by Wickwire that scored Devin Jones. Virginia State scored four more runs in the sixth in the win. Four different Mountaineers had hits in the loss. Young took the loss in the circle giving up eight runs on 15 hits in five innings while striking out four. Conor Decker tossed one inning of relief allowing one run on two hits while issuing one free pass.
SCOUTING BLOOMSBURG
Bloomsburg is hitting .294 as a team (ninth in the PSAC), slugging .456 (fourth) and owns an on-base percentage (OBP) of .332. The Huskies are tied for fourth in the conference in doubles (30), have hit two triples and are second in the conference in home runs (13). Wheeland leads the team and is 10
th individually in the conference with a .476 batting average, while
Ashli Venokur (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick) is right behind her with a .448 mark. Five other Huskies are hitting .300 or above so far on the season. Winkelman's six doubles are tied for second in the PSAC, while Mayhew and Hall are tied for second on the team with four apiece. Wheeland's four bleacher creatures lead the team and are tied for third in the conference, while Mayhew's three jacks are tied for fourth. Wheeland is also tied for sixth in the conference with a slugging percentage of .800, while her .500 OBP is tied for 13
th individually in the league. The Huskies own a 4.59 team earned run average (ERA) and a .303 batting average against through 108.1 innings in the circle. Baney owns a team-best 1.69 ERA through 10 appearances with four starts totaling 41.1 innings. Her ERA is the ninth-best in the conference individually. Wild and Davies share the team lead in wins with three, while Baney has two saves on the year and Wild has one.
Erin Smith (Tunkhannock, Pa./Tunkhannock Area) and
Balee Leeser (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) have also contributed a combined 7.2 innings in the circle. As a team, the Huskies own a .939 fielding percentage.
SCOUTING MANSFIELD
Through five games, Mansfield leads the conference in batting average (.424), slugging percentage (.663) and OBP (.482). The Mountaineers have hit 14 doubles, three triples and are tied for seventh in the conference in home runs with seven. Pearce leads the team and is second in the conference with a .643 average, while Taylor Chidester (.543) is fourth individually and Snyder (.529) is fifth. Jones leads the team in doubles with three, while four others have also hit two-baggers on the year. Wickwire and Snyder have hit the only triples for Mansfield on the season, while Sterner has hit three home runs and Snyder and Hester have each hit two. In the circle, Mansfield owns a 4.67 team ERA and also a .355 batting average against in 33.0 innings. Storm owns a team-low 3.18 ERA in 11.0 innings that included two starts, one win and one complete game. Young, Decker and Roys have also contributed a combined 14.0 innings in the circle. Mansfield's .950 team fielding percentage is also 10
th in the PSAC.
SCOUTING PITT-JOHNSTOWN
Pitt-Johnstown owns a .280 team batting average, a .333 slugging percentage and an OBP of .343. The Mountain Cats have hit nine doubles and two home runs on the season. Morgan Cannin leads the team and is third in the conference with a .543 batting average, while three others are hitting at least .300 on the season. Cannin's .571 slugging percentage and .600 OBP (tied for third in the PSAC) also lead the team. Taylor Hoover's four doubles lead the team and are tied for 16
th in the conference, while McKenna Kern and Jade Stubblefield have hit the only long balls on the year for UPJ. The Mountain Cats own a 5.57 team ERA, led by a 0.88 mark from Emily Moore which is second individually in the conference. Moore has allowed one run in eight innings on the season. Melissa Wagner has worked the majority of the innings for UPJ, amassing 25.2 innings and a 5.45 ERA. Kristen Coffay also has worked at least 10 innings in the circle, pitching to a 4.91 ERA through 15.2 innings. Montana Mang and Ashley Pagliei have also worked a combined 15.2 innings in the circle for the Mountain Cats. AS a team, UPJ owns a .936 fielding percentage.
