WEEKEND PREVIEW: Women's Tennis Welcomes Jefferson and Virginia State for Non-Conference Weekend Contests

STORYLINE
The Huskies carry their six-match winning streak out of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) for the weekend to host Jefferson (formerly Philadelphia University) on Friday (Apr. 13) and Virginia State twice on Saturday (Apr. 14). 
 
ALL-TIME SERIES
This will be the seventh all-time meeting between Bloomsburg and Jefferson. Jefferson leads the all-time series 4-2. 
 
Bloomsburg and Virginia State have met once previously, with BU getting the only win in the series history. 
 
LAST MEETING
Bloomsburg defeated then Philadelphia University 6-3 in their last meeting during the 2007-08 season. 
 
The Huskies defeated Virginia State 5-0 back during the 2008-09 season. 
 
LAST TIME OUT
The Huskies pitched their third straight shutout and won their sixth straight match defeating Kutztown 9-0 at home back on Tuesday (Apr. 10) in PSAC East competition. The Huskies swept all nine matches winning three doubles contests and six singles bouts. Cassidy Calimer (Egg Harbor City, N.J./Absegami) and Isabella Sarquis (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Metodo) won by default over Kara Urland and Taylor Capoferri at No. 1 doubles 7-4, before Giovanna Bonito (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Reino) and Catherine Garrity (Allentown, Pa./Emmaus) won 8-6 at No. 2 over Alicia Pursell and Yasmeen Malik. Chloe Berridge (York, Pa./Dallastown) and Sienna Cerra completed the doubles sweep with an 8-2 win at No. 3 over Shadimon Navarro and Mackenzie Delp. Calimer started singles play with a 3-6, 6-4, 10-4 win over Capoferri at No. 1, before reigining PSAC East Athlete of the Week Bonito defeated Malik 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2. Sarquiz swept Pursell at No. 3 in straight sets 6-0, 6-1, while Berridge beat Delp by an identical 6-0, 6-1 score at No. 4. Wentz defeated Elyssa Tomczyk 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5, before Garrity shut out Navarro 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6. 
 
Jefferson defeated Kutztown 8-1 back on Apr. 6 in non-conference action. Jefferson swept doubles play and won five out of six singles matches. Marta Yevstakhevych and Lauren Candia won at No. 1 doubles 8-4, before Millie Coombes and Lindsey McDonough won at No. 2 8-1. Usha Baublitz and Katelyn High completed the doubles sweep with a 9-7 win at No. 3. Yevstakhevych dropped her No. 1 singles match 6-1, 6-4 as the only loss for Jefferson, while Candia won at No. 2 singles in straight sets 6-1, 6-2. Baublitz won a three-set thriller at No. 3 6-4, 3-6, 10-3, before Coombes swept her No. 4 singles match 6-0, 6-0. McDonough won in straight sets at No. 5 6-1, 6-0 before Eryn Nguyen closed out the match with a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 6. 
 
Virginia State blanked Virginia Union 9-0 in their last match back on Apr. 6, sweeping the three doubles contests and all six singles matches. Sydney Yao and Tamisha Richardson won their No. 1 doubles match 8-3, before Felicia Tucker and Christina Washington got the shutout win at No. 2 8-0. Deja Lovitt and Katlyn Kearney earned the 8-1 win at No. 3 to complete the doubles sweep. The Trojans did not surrender a set in singles play, beginning with a 6-3, 6-2 win from Yao at No. 1. Washington won her No. 2 match 6-1, 6-2, before Richardson won by shutout at No. 3 6-0, 6-0. Tucker picked up a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 4, while Lovitt captured a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 5. Charde Washington closed out the match with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 6. 
 
SCOUTING BLOOMSBURG
The Huskies own a 34-18 combine doubles record as well as a 63-35 combined singles record on the year. Calimer and Nery lead the doubles effort with nine wins, while Bonito and Garrity as a tandem have won six matches. Cerra and Sarquis are 4-0 as a duo, while four other doubles pairs have won two matches apiece and another six tandems have one win. Wentz leads the team in singles play with a team-high 11 wins, while Berridge, Bonito and Nery each have nine wins on the season. Sarquis owns eight singles wins, while Calimer has recorded five to date. Cerra has three singles wins on the year, while Cara Eschenmann (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) also has two. 
 
SCOUTING JEFFERSON
The Rams own a 36-12 doubles record on the season along with a combined 54-41 singles record. The team of Candia and Yestakhevych is 14-1 on the year, while Coombes and McDonough are 7-2 in doubles play. Baublitz and High are 4-1 in doubles play, while three other tandems each have three wins and another two duos have one each. Candia leads the team with 13 singles wins, while Coombes has 11. McDonough has eight singles wins on the season, while Nguyen and Yevstakhevych each have six. Baublitz and Emily Zygmunt each have four, while High and Tabitha Porter each have one singles win on the year. 
 
SCOUTING VIRGINIA STATE
The Trojans come into the match with a 29-10 combined doubles record and a 58-20 combined singles record. 
 
UP NEXT
The Huskies will begin play at the PSAC Championships in the semifinal round on Friday (Apr. 20). The Huskies clinched the top seed last week and therefore secured a bye in the quarterfinal round. The semifinal action begins at 10:00 a.m. at the Burt Reese Tennis Center.
