BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg University softball team picked up two key Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Central division wins on Saturday (Apr. 14), sweeping Mansfield by scores of 8-0 (six innings) and 6-3.
The Huskies got game one started in a big way, when
Emily Mayhew (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) launched her fifth dinger of the season to put the Huskies up 1-0. Wheeland would follow it up with a one-out single to right, before the second out was recorded. An infield single from
Emily Getz (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) moved Wheeland to second, before
Abbey Remley (Berwick, Pa./Berwick Area) drove home the second run of the inning on a RBI single to left center that scored Wheeland. The game would go scoreless for the next four innings, before the Huskies distance themselves from Mansfield with four runs in the top of the fifth. Mayhew began the frame with a one-out single through the left side, before Wheeland would reach on a fielder's choice and an error on the play would leave Mayhew safe at second. An infield single from
Marissa Shelhamer (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) loaded the bases, before
Emily Getz (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) delivered the big blow. Getz mashed her first homer of the season on a ball that did not leave the yard. The inside-the-park grand slam scored Mayhew unearned, pinch runner
Jadyn Dunkelberger (Shamokin, Pa./Southern Columbia) and Shelhamer to put the Huskies up 6-0. BU would pad their lead with two more runs in the sixth, beginning with a leadoff double to right center by eventual winning pitcher
Alyssa Davies (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood). With one out in the frame,
Taylor Winkelman (Springfield, Pa/Springfield) would reach on a throwing error, before Mayhew would fly out to center and advance pinch runner Lindsey Nemeth to third with two outs. After Winkelman stole second, Wheeland singled to left center to score Nemeth and Winkelman unearned before being thrown out trying to stretch it for second. Davies got the Mountaineers 1-2-3 in the bottom of the sixth to end the game short by mercy rule.
The Huskies scored eight runs on 11 hits while committing one error, and they were also aided by three Mansfield errors in the game. Four Huskies each tallied two hits apiece in the win, while Winkelman, Remley and Davies each had one hit. Getz drove in a game-high four, while Wheeland brought home two and Mayhew and Remley each drove in a run. Mayhew crossed the plate twice in the game, while six others scored one run each. Davies (4-6) picked up her fourth win in the circle, firing a complete-game shutout. The redshirt junior allowed only three hits and one walk while punching out four.
The Huskies would start the scoring in game two with two runs in the second coming on
Tara Baney (Howard, Pa./Bellefonte)'s third bleacher creature of the season that brought home Remley. Remley would single to center field in the third to score Shelhamer to put the Huskies up by three. After a scoreless fourth, the Huskies padded their lead further with two more runs in the fifth. Remley doubled down the right field line to bring home Dunkelberger, before an infield single by Baney scored Getz later in the inning. Down 5-0, Mansfield would make it a game with three runs in their half of the fifth. The first came on a sacrifice fly by Rachael Sterner that scored Alli McGovern unearned, before Anastasia Hester brought home their other two runs with a single to center field that scored Joelle Snyder. Alex Hein also came home on the play aided by a throwing error from the outfield. Bloomsburg would get one more insurance run in the top of the sixth, when a sacrifice fly by Wheeland scored Winkelman to make it 6-3.
The Huskies scored six runs on 13 hits while committing two errors in the win. Remley paced the offense in game two with a 3-4 day, while four other Huskies had two hits and Mayhew and Shelhamer each chipped in one. Remley and Baney each drove in two runs, while Wheeland picked up one RBI in the contest. Six different Huskies scored runs in the nightcap for BU.
