LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Bloomsburg University softball team suffered a pivotal sweep at Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Central division rival Lock Haven on Friday (Apr. 20), dropping game one 7-3 and falling in game two 4-1. This was the second time this season that Bloomsburg has been swept by Lock Haven.
The Huskies got the scoring started in a big way in game one, with
Kalynn Wheeland (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport)'s eighth long ball of the year bringing home three runs for a 3-0 lead. Becca Caputo would get the Bald Eagles on the board with a solo shot in the bottom of the first, but the Huskies held the lead after one inning. Lock Haven would take the lead for good in game one with four runs in the bottom of the third, starting with a Faith Ceely leadoff single before Ceely stole second. Ceely advanced to third on a groundout for the first out, before a RBI single from Caputo brought home Ceely to get Lock Haven within 3-2. Madison Mathes singled to shortstop to move Caputo to second, before Caputo would score from second on an infield single to tie the game at three. After Hilty stole second, Casey Carpenter singled home both Mathes and Hilty to put Lock Haven up 5-3. The Bald Eagles would score once in the bottom of the fifth and once in the sixth to secure the win.
Bloomsburg scored three runs on five hits while committing three errors in game one.
Emily Mayhew (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) led the offense with two hits in the game, while three other Huskies had one hit each. Wheeland drove home all three runs on one swing, while she, Mayhew and Hall all scored in the game.
Alyssa Davies (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood) (4-6) took the loss in the circle for BU, allowing five runs on seven hits in three innings.
Tara Baney (Howard, Pa./Bellefonte) tossed three innings in relief, allowing two runs on seven hits while punching out two.
The Huskies would get on the board first again in game two, with
Marissa Shelhamer (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) recording a sacrifice fly that scored
Taylor Winkelman (Springfield, Pa/Springfield). Lock Haven would again pull away with a big inning, plating three runs in the bottom of the second and padding their lead with one run in the bottom of the third. The Bald Eagles would score on a RBI single from Traci Kromko that scored Amanda Loar, before Moriah Lindsey brought home Chloe Kennedy and Kromko with a single up the middle. Loar would bring home Olivia Hall on a sacrifice fly in the third to put the score at 4-1, before neither team would score for the remainder of the game.
Winkelman and Wheeland each recorded two hits in the loss, while
Bridget Casey (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) and
Ashli Venokur (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick) each tallied one hit in the game. Shelhamer recorded the lone RBI in the game, while Winkelman scored the lone run.
Balee Leeser (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) (0-1) got hung with the loss in the circle, giving up three runs on four hits in addition to one walk in 1.2 innings.
Nicolette Ray (Abington, Pa./Abington) relieved Leeser for one third of an inning allowing one run on two hits with one walk, while Davies rebounded to fire four hitless innings while firing three strikeouts.
The pair of wins moves Lock Haven to 26-10 and 14-0 in the PSAC Central, while Bloomsburg falls to 14-17 overall and 6-8 in the division.
The Huskies are back at home on Saturday (Apr. 21) when they welcome Pitt-Johnstown for another Central division doubleheader. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m. at Jan M. Hutchinson Field.
