Huskies Rebound for Sweep of Pitt-Johnstown on Saturday

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg University softball team earned a big Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) sweep over Pitt-Johnstown on Saturday (Apr. 21), winning game one 10-0 in five innings and game two 5-1. 
 
The Huskies got the offense going from the start scoring four runs in the first inning, following it up with two runs in the second, three runs and one run in the fourth. The first run came on a bases-loaded walk drawn by Tara Baney (Howard, Pa./Bellefonte) that scored Kalynn Wheeland (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport) unearned, before Bridget Casey (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) ripped a double to right center to score Baney, Emily Getz (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) and Marissa Shelhamer (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia)  unearned before being thrown out trying to stretch it to third. The two runs in the second came on an RBI single to center by Wheeland to score Ashli Venokur (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick), before Wheeland would advance to second and Maggie Hall (Cooperstown, N.Y./Cooperstown) would score on a fielding error that extended the play. In the third, Taylor Winkelman (Springfield, Pa/Springfield) brought home Casey with a RBI single, before a double from Hall brought home both Venokur and Winkelman. Casey's second double of the game would score the lone run in the fourth, scoring Lindsay Nemeth (Drums, Pa./Marian Catholic)
 
Bloomsburg scored 10 runs on 11 hits while not committing an error, while also being aided by two UPJ errors. Wheeland led the offense with a 3-3 game, while three other Huskies tallied two hits apiece in the win. Baney and Venokur also each recorded one hit in the win. Casey drove in four runs, while Hall drove in two and three others brought home one run each. Venokur was the lone Husky to cross the plate twice, while eight others scored one run each. Alyssa Davies (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood) (5-6) fired a complete game shutout, allowing just three hits and striking out one. 
 
Game two would go into the third scoreless, before the teams traded one run apiece in the inning. Stacy Walling brought home Morgan Cannin on a sacrifice fly to open the scoring for the Mountain Cats, before Shelhamer would counter that with a sacrifice fly that brought home Erin Smith (Tunkhannock, Pa./Tunkhannock Area) in the bottom of the third. After a scoreless fourth inning, the Huskies would explode for four runs in the bottom of the fifth to pull away. Shelhamer would bring home Hall on a RBI single through the left side, before Davies would single to right center to score Nemeth. Casey would continue her strong day knocking a single to bring home Shelhamer, before Venokur recorded a sacrifice fly that scored Davies. 
 
The Huskies scored five runs on eight hits while committing two errors, and BU was also aided by one UPJ error. Wheeland and Casey each recorded two hits in the win, while four others contributed one hit each. Shelhamer brought home two runs in the win, while three others each drove in one. Five different Huskies scored in the win. Davies (6-6) earned her second win of the day in relief of the starter Baney, allowing just one hit and striking out three over 4.2 innings of scoreless relief. Baney tossed 2.1 innings in the start. Allowing one run on two hits with three walks and one strikeout. 
 
Bloomsburg improves to 16-17 overall and 8-8 in the PSAC Central, while UPJ falls to 9-19 and 5-9 in the division. 

The Huskies are back at Jan M. Hutchinson Field on Tuesday (Apr. 24) when they welcome Millersville for a doubleheader that was originally scheduled for Apr. 17. First pitch is ste for 2:30 p.m.
