BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg University softball team was swept at home on Tuesday (Apr. 24) by Millersville, falling in game one 14-2 in five innings and then dropping game two 5-2.
Millersville would score the first 11 runs of the game with three runs in the first, one in the second and seven runs in the third. The Huskies committed four errors defensively that led to six unearned runs. Bloomsburg got on the board with a RBI double from
Emily Mayhew (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) that scored
Ashli Venokur (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick). Millersville would top it off with three runs in the top of the fifth, before
Nicolette Ray (Abington, Pa./Abington) reached and advanced to second on a ball that got by the second baseman that rolled all the way to the wall to allow pinch runner
Jadyn Dunkelberger (Shamokin, Pa./Southern Columbia) to score from first unearned.
The Huskies scored two runs on five hits while committing four errors.
Maggie Hall (Cooperstown, N.Y./Cooperstown) led the offense with two hits in game one, while Mayhew,
Tara Baney (Howard, Pa./Bellefonte) and
Bridget Casey (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) each tallied one hit in the loss. Mayhew drove in one run on the day, while Dunkelberger and Venokur each scored runs in game one.
Alyssa Davies (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood) (6-7) took the loss in game one giving up four runs, three earned on four hits in two innings. The redshirt junior walked one and struck out two in the start before being relieved by
Erin Smith (Tunkhannock, Pa./Tunkhannock Area). Smith tossed three innings allowing 10 runs, five earned on eight hits while walking two and striking out one.
Game two remained scoreless into the third, before Millersville got on the board on an Allie Janowiak single that scored Raeann Buskey. Bloomsburg would tie the game on Casey's first homer of the season and just the second of her career. After a scoreless fifth inning, Millersville would pull away with four runs in the sixth. Faith Willenbrock homered to right center to put Millersville up 2-1 to start the inning. Pinch runner Nicole Burke would later score on a wild pitch, before Morgan Almodovar singled home Kaelyn Buskey to make it 4-1. Devan Mascuili brought home Raeann Buskey with a single to right center to put the Marauders ahead 5-1. The Huskies would get one run back in the seventh when
Alexa Erney (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) singled home
Marissa Shelhamer (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) to get the game to its final score.
Bloomsburg scored two runs on nine hits while committing one error in game two. Hall, Shelhamer and Erney each had two hits in the second game while
Taylor Winkelman (Springfield, Pa/Springfield), Casey and
Abby Wild (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) each recorded one hit. Erney and Casey drove in runs in the game, while Casey and Shelhamer scored. Baney (7-6) took the loss in game two, allowing five runs on 11 hits in 5.1 innings. Baney did not surrender a walk and recorded four strikeouts. Wild came on in relief for the last 1.2 innings, not giving up a run on four hits while punching out three.
Bloomsburg falls to 16-19 overall while Millersville improves to 23-14.
The Huskies return to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Central division on Friday (Apr. 27) when they travel to Indiana (Pa.) for a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m.
