STORYLINE
The Huskies will close out the regular season with a huge weekend in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Central division, traveling to IUP on Friday (Apr. 27) and Clarion on Saturday (Apr. 28). Bloomsburg and IUP will look to clinch their spots in the 2018 PSAC Softball Championships this weekend.
ALL-TIME SERIES
This will be the 72nd and 73rd all-time meetings between Bloomsburg and IUP. BU holds the all-time series lead 60-11.
This will be the 22nd and 23rd all-time meetings between Bloomsburg and Clarion. BU leads the all-time series 21-0.
LAST MEETING
The Huskies split their last meeting with IUP earlier this season back on Apr. 13, dropping game one 11-9 and winning game two in walk-off fashion 4-3. The Huskies began the scoring in game one in the bottom of the first with a RBI single to center from
Marissa Shelhamer (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) that scored
Maggie Hall (Cooperstown, N.Y./Cooperstown). IUP would take a 4-1 lead with four runs in the top of the second. The Huskies got two runs back in the bottom of the second beginning with Hall reaching on a fielder's choice that scored
Bridget Casey (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge).
Kalynn Wheeland (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport) would later single to left center to score
Tara Baney (Howard, Pa./Bellefonte) to get the Huskies back within 4-3. Bloomsburg would tie the game at four on a RBI single to right by Baney that scored
Emily Getz (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown). IUP re-gained the lead in the top of the fourth with three runs in the frame. Bloomsburg got one run back in the fourth on a RBI double from Shelhamer that scored
Lindsay Nemeth (Drums, Pa./Marian Catholic) to get back within 7-5, before IUP would plate two more runs in the top of the sixth. A pinch-hit single by
Kelsey Impink (Schwenksville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) scored the next run for BU scoring Shelhamer, before
Nicolette Ray (Abington, Pa./Abington) singled up the middle with two outs to bring on Getz and Impink and tie the game at nine in the sixth. IUP would strike twice in the top of the seventh to secure the win.
The Huskies scored nine runs on 13 hits while committing three errors in the game one loss. Shelhamer went 4-5 to lead the offense in game one, while three other Huskies posted two hits apiece and another three recorded one hit each. Shelhamer and Ray each drove in two runs, while five others brought home one run each. Getz scored twice in the win, while seven others crossed the plate once in the win.
Alyssa Davies (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood) (3-6) got hung with the loss in the circle, allowing four runs on three hits in just 1.1 innings while also walking four and striking out two. Baney tossed 2.1 innings of relief after Davies, allowing three runs on seven hits with three walks and one strikeout. Ray also came on for 3.1 innings of relief in which she allowed four runs, three earned on three hits with five walks and one strikeout.
The Crimson Hawks would get the scoring started in game two with one run in the top of the first. The Huskies took a 2-1 lead on Wheeland's seventh long ball of the season that also scored Mayhew, before increasing their lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the third on a Hall RBI double down the left field line that scored
Erin Smith (Tunkhannock, Pa./Tunkhannock Area). The lead carried into the top of the sixth, before IUP would plate two runs to tie the game at three. The game went to the bottom of the seventh tied, which began with a one-out single to left field by Hall.
Emily Mayhew (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) would single up the middle to move Hall to second, setting the stage for Wheeland with just one out. Wheeland ripped a 3-2 pitch into the left center gap to score Hall and get the Huskies the walk-off win.
Four different Huskies tallied two hits apiece in the win, while another three recorded one hit apiece. Wheeland drove in a game-high three runs along with one RBI from Hall, while four different Huskies scored in the win. Baney (6-5) got the win in 1.1 of hitless and scoreless relief after freshman
Balee Leeser (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) made her first career start. The freshman battled for 5.2 innings allowing three runs on six hits.
The Huskies swept Clarion back on Apr. 7 winning game one 3-2 in eight innings and game two 10-6. Game one went scoreless for the first six innings, before both teams would plate two runs in the sixth. Clarion scored two runs on three hits in the top of the sixth. The home half of the sixth began with a leadoff double down the left field line from Hall, before a groundout by Mayhew moved Hall to third. That set the stage for Wheeland, who bombed her sixth homer of the season over the right field fence to tie the game at two. After a clean seventh inning for both teams, Clarion would once again put the pressure on the home team. After Baney came in to relieve Davies with one out and a runner on third, the freshman would extinguish the threat and give the Huskies a chance to walk it off. Hall began the bottom half of the eighth with a single through the left side, before advancing all the way to third on a sacrifice bunt by Mayhew. With one out, Wheeland stepped to the plate and delivered the walk-off sacrifice fly to center to score Hall and end the game.
The Huskies scored three runs on seven hits and did not commit an error in the win. Hall led the offense with a 3-4 game including a double, while scoring twice. Four others each tallied hits in the game, with Wheeland driving in all three runs and also scoring once. Baney (4-5) got the win in relief, recording two strikeouts in 0.2 innings. Davies dazzled for 7.1 innings, allowing just two runs on eight hits without issuing a walk and also registering five punch-outs.
Clarion would begin game two with aggressiveness, executing a double-steal that plated the first run. The Huskies matched Clarion in the first inning, with a RBI double from Wheeland scoring
Taylor Winkelman (Springfield, Pa/Springfield). The Huskies would scratch across another run in the second, starting when Getz got on with a one-out single up the middle. Baney popped up to short for the second out, before Smith reached on a fielding error by Clarion's first baseman. After the initial error, Golden Eagle first baseman Alexis Boie threw the ball away allowing Getz to move to third. Getz would score unearned and Smith would advance on a passed ball later in the inning. The Huskies would explode for eight runs in the bottom of the third to pull away, beginning with a single to right center by Mayhew. Wheeland's second double of the game moved Mayhew to third, before Shelhamer executed a textbook bunt and reached on a single scoring Mayhew and advancing Wheeland to third. Impink would join the hit parade dropping a single into right center to score Wheeland, before Getz would reach on an another error and advance to second on the throw home to try to nab Shelhamer who scored on the play. Baney would break things open with a two-RBI double to right center that scored both Getz and Impink. After a pitching change, Smith would continue the inning with an infield single, before the ball was thrown away allowing Baney to score. After two outs were recorded in the inning, Mayhew came up with some two-out lightning with a double down the left field line that scored Smith unearned. The inning would continue when Wheeland was hit by a pitch and Shelhamer drew a walk to load the bases. Impink was then plunked, scoring Mayhew unearned. The Huskies led 10-1 through three innings. Clarion would respond with one run in the fourth and two runs in the fifth. Clarion would go on to plate two runs in the seventh, but the Huskies would shut it down from there to complete the sweep.
The Huskies scored 10 runs on 12 hits while committing four errors in the game two win. Three Huskies tallied two hits apiece, while six other Huskies each notched one hit in the win. Baney and Impink each drove in two runs, while four others drove home one run each in the win. Mayhew and Getz each scored twice, with six others crossing the plate one time each. Baney (5-5) collected her second win of the day, firing a complete game. She surrendered six runs, four earned on seven hits while issuing two free passes and racking up 11 strikeouts.
LAST TIME OUT
Bloomsburg was swept by Millersville at home on Tuesday (Apr. 24) dropping game one 14-2 in five innings before falling in game two 5-2. Millersville would score the first 11 runs of the game with three runs in the first, one in the second and seven runs in the third. The Huskies committed four errors defensively that led to six unearned runs. Bloomsburg got on the board with a RBI double from Mayhew that scored
Ashli Venokur (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick). Millersville would top it off with three runs in the top of the fifth, before
Nicolette Ray (Abington, Pa./Abington) reached and advanced to second on a ball that got by the second baseman that rolled all the way to the wall to allow pinch runner
Jadyn Dunkelberger (Shamokin, Pa./Southern Columbia) to score from first unearned.
The Huskies scored two runs on five hits while committing four errors. Hall led the offense with two hits in game one, while Mayhew, Baney and Casey each tallied one hit in the loss. Mayhew drove in one run on the day, while Dunkelberger and Venokur each scored runs in game one. Davies (6-7) took the loss in game one giving up four runs, three earned on four hits in two innings. The redshirt junior walked one and struck out two in the start before being relieved by Smith. Smith tossed three innings allowing 10 runs, five earned on eight hits while walking two and striking out one.
Game two went to the third inning scoreless, before Millersville broke the tie with one run. Bloomsburg would tie the game on Casey's first homer of the season and just the second of her career. After a scoreless fifth inning, Millersville would pull away with four runs in the sixth. The Huskies would get one run back in the seventh when
Alexa Erney (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) singled home Shelhamer to get the game to its final score.
Bloomsburg scored two runs on nine hits while committing one error in game two. Hall, Shelhamer and Erney each had two hits in the second game while Winkelman, Casey and
Abby Wild (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) each recorded one hit. Erney and Casey drove in runs in the game, while Casey and Shelhamer scored. Baney (7-6) took the loss in game two, allowing five runs on 11 hits in 5.1 innings. Baney did not surrender a walk and recorded four strikeouts. Wild came on in relief for the last 1.2 innings, not giving up a run on four hits while punching out three.
IUP takes on Pitt-Johnstown in PSAC Central action on Thursday (Apr. 26), and results will not be gathered in time for this preview. IUP last played on Monday (Apr. 23), sweeping Mercyhurst by winning game one 6-2 and getting the sweep by shutout 8-0 in five innings in game two. IUP started the scoring in game one with two runs in the first and one run in the second. Kaitlyn Beers brought home Alaina Montgomery on a two-run bomb, before Montgomery would bring home Megan Little on a RBI single in the second. IUP would pad its lead with a sacrifice fly by Brooklyn Kotula to score Little in the fourth, before Mercyhurst would get on the board with one run in the fourth. After the Lakers scored again in the sixth, IUP scored on an Amanda Parrish single that brought home Renee Wall and Montgomery both unearned.
Montgomery led the offense with three hits in game one, while Beers and Little each tallied two hits in the win. Parrish and Kotula also recorded one hit each in the win. Beers drove in two runs, while Montgomery and Kotula each brought home one run. Montgomery and Little each scored twice, while Beers and Wall each scored once in the game. Lauren Zola earned the win in the circle allowing two runs, one earned on four hits in seven innings. Zola did not issue a walk and punched out 11 in the win.
IUP began the scoring in game two when a Beers RBI single brought home Kassie Kesneck unearned, before IUP put three runs up in the third and four in the fourth to effectively end the game by mercy rule. The first of three runs in the third came on a RBI single from Little that scored Beers, before Kotula brought home Little and Parrish later in the inning on a two-RBI single. In the fourth, Rachel Rodriguez singled home Lauren Goetz before Beers brought home Montgomery with a RBI single. Rodriguez would later score and Beers would move into scoring position on a wild pitch, before Parrish singled Beers home to put the game at 8-0.
Beers paced the offense with a 3-3 day, while Goetz recorded two hits and seven other Crimson Hawks each tallied one hit. Beers and Kotula each drove in two runs, while three others drove in one each. Beers was the only Crimson Hawk to score twice, while six others crossed the plate once in the game. Megan Reisinger earned the win in the circle tossing a two-hit shutout while issuing three walks and striking out two.
Clarion split its last doubleheader with Mansfield back on Saturday (Apr. 21), winning game one 10-9 and losing game two 13-4 in five innings. Clarion would score the first run with one in the first on a Jessica Cartia single that score Taylor Nonnenberg unearned. Mansfield would take a 3-1 lead with three runs in the second, before Clarion would get back within one in the bottom of the second. Cassidy Runyan singled home Natalie Else unearned to make it 3-2. Mansfield would pull away for the time being with five runs in the top of the third to make it 8-2. After a scoreless fourth, Clarion would get back within one for the second time with five runs in the bottom of the fifth. The first run of the inning came on another Cartia single that scored Nonnenberg, before Rebecca Kelley launched a three-run dinger to score Moriah Lynn and Cartia. The fifth run came on an Aryn Boyer single that score Else to make it 8-7. After Mansfield scored one run in the top of the sixth to make their lead 9-7, Clarion would take the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth with three runs. Runyan crossed the plate for the first run of the inning when Cassie Daniels reached on a fielder's choice, before Kelley came up with the big two-RBI single that scored both Lynn and Cartia unearned. The Golden Eagles would hold on for the win in game one.
Clarion scored 10 runs on 11 hits while committing one error, and they were also aided by four Mansfield errors. Cartia led the offense with three hits in the game, while Kelley and Runyan each tallied two hits and four other Golden Eagles each recorded one hit in the win. Kelley finished with a game-high five RBI, while Cartia drove in two and three others each brought home one. Four different Golden Eagles crossed the plate twice, while Kelley and Runyan also scored once. Laura Sadowski picked up the win in the circle, firing 4.1 innings of relief allowing two runs on five hits. She also walked and struck out one each in relief of starter Sarah Gossard. Gossard went 2.2 innings in the start giving up seven runs on 11 hits. Kelley also faced three batters in the bottom of the seventh allowing one hit and one walk.
Clarion would strike first in game two with two runs in the second coming on a homer from Kelley and a Haley Pszyk single that scored Else. The Golden Eagles would paid their lead with two more runs in the third when Kelley singled to score Cartia and Else singled to score Lynn. Trailing 4-0, Mansfield would score all their runs in the next two innings, plating six runs in the fourth and seven in the fifth to end the game by mercy rule. Clarion scored four runs on seven hits but hurt themselves with four errors. Kelley and Else each registered two hits in the game, while three others each had one hit. Kelley drove in two runs in the game, while Else and Pszyk each drove in one run. Four different Golden Eagles scored in the loss. Macy Rubin took the loss in the circle allowing five runs, three earned on seven hits in 3.1 innings. She walked one and struck out one in the start. She was relieved for one inning by Sadowski who surrendered six runs, four earned on six hits. Gossard tossed the final 0.2 innings, allowing two unearned runs on one hit along with one walk.
SCOUTING BLOOMSBURG
The Huskies are the fifth-best hitting team in the PSAC with a team batting average of .304 and are one of five teams to be hitting at least .300 on the year. BU is also third in the conference with a .456 slugging percentage, while owning a .348 on-base percentage (OBP). Wheeland's team-high .456 average is second in the conference, while eight other Huskies are hitting at least .300 on the season. Wheeland also leads the team in slugging percentage with a mark of .777, which is the third-highest individual mark in the conference. Wheeland also leads the team in OBP with a mark of .487 which is also tied for sixth in the PSAC. Bloomsburg is second in the conference in doubles with 68, has hit two triples and is fourth in the conference in home runs with 25. Hall's 11 doubles lead the team and are tied for eighth in the league, while Winkelman has 10 doubles and Wheeland has nine. Hall and Smith have each hit triples for Bloomsburg on the season. Wheeland's eight long balls lead the team and are also tied for third in the conference, while Mayhew's five are tied for ninth in the PSAC. Bloomsburg has pitched to a 4.34 earned run average (ERA) as a team on the year, as well as being tied for 10
th in batting average against at .296. The Huskies are one of 10 teams in the conference to hold opponents under a .300 team batting average. Baney owns the team's lowest ERA at 2.76 through 83.2 innings, while Davies also owns a solid 3.89 ERA through 77.1 innings. Leeser, Wild, Ray and Smith have also combined to throw 66.2 innings in the circle this season for BU. As a team, the Huskies own a .944 fielding percentage.
SCOUTING IUP
IUP is hitting .275 as a team on the season, slugging .383 and getting on base at a clip of .364, the sixth-highest team OBP in the conference. Wall's .384 average leads the team and is tied for 12
th individually in the conference. Three other Crimson Hawks are hitting at least .300 on the season. Wall's .603 slugging percentage also leads the team and is 11
th in the conference individually, while Beers is second on the team slugging .574. Wall also leads the team and is third in the conference in OBP at .515, while three others own an OBP of at least .400. IUP is ninth in the league in doubles with 43, has hit one triple and also 11 home runs. Wall's 10 doubles lead the team and are tied for 11
th in the conference, while Beers has hit the lone triple on the season for the Crimson Hawks. Beers leads the team with three bombs, while Wall, Kesneck and Olivia Gregorich have each hit two and three others have hit one long ball each. IUP has the fifth-lowest team ERA in the conference at 2.92, while being one of five teams to boast a team mark under 3.00. IUP also has the seventh-lowest batting average against in the conference at .281 and is one of 10 teams to hold opponents hitting under .300 against them. Risinger leads the team with a 2.79 mark in 80.1 innings, while Zola owns a 2.95 ERA through 97.1 innings. Kotula has also contributed 10.2 innings through which she posts a 3.94 ERA. IUP is also the third-best fielding team in the conference with a fielding percentage of .967.
SCOUTING CLARION
Clarion is hitting just .244 as a team, while slugging .356 and owning a .312 OBP. Cartia is Clarion's leading hitter with a .352 average, while Nonnenberg is second on the team with a .337 mark. Cartia's .692 slugging percentage also leads the team, while Kelley (.536) and Runyan (.436) are the only other Golden Eagles slugging at least .400 on the season. Cartia is also the team's leader in OBP at .392, while five other Golden Eagles have an OBP of at least .300. Clarion has hit 27 doubles on the season, three triples and is also seventh in the league in home runs with 18. Cartia's seven doubles lead the team, while 10 others have hit doubles on the year. Lynn has hit two triples on the year, with the other coming off the bat of Boie. Cartia also leads the team with eight jacks on the season, which is tied for third in the PSAC. Kelley is second on the team with five dingers on the season. Clarion is last in the league with a 6.54 team ERA, while teams are hitting .375 against them. Rubin owns a 4.64 ERA through 63.1 innings, while Gossard has posted a 6.18 ERA through 62.1 innings. Sadowski, Kelley and Lynn have also combined for 75 innings in the circle for Clarion on the season. As a team, Clarion has fielded to a .938 mark on the season.
