BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg University softball team swept Clarion on Saturday (Apr. 7) in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Central division play, winning game one 3-2 and game two 10-6.
Game one went scoreless for the first six innings, before both teams would plate two runs in the sixth. Clarion's half of the sixth began with a two-out single up the middle from Taylor Nonnenburg, before Cassidy Runyan reached on a bunt single to the right side. Moriah Lynn stepped to the plate and laced a triple to the right center gap scoring Nonnenburg and Runyan to put Clarion up 2-0. The home half of the sixth began with a leadoff double down the left field line from
Maggie Hall (Cooperstown, N.Y./Cooperstown), before a groundout by
Emily Mayhew (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) moved Hall to third. That set the stage for
Kalynn Wheeland (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport), who bombed her sixth homer of the season over the right field fence to tie the game at two. After a clean seventh inning for both teams, Clarion would once again put the pressure on the home team. The frame began with a leadoff double to left by Aryn Boyer, who advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Natalie Else. Nonnenburg would single to third base, keeping Boyer from scoring. Starter
Alyssa Davies (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood) was lifted for
Tara Baney (Howard, Pa./Bellefonte) after a phenomenal performance, and the freshman was faced with a runner on third and one out upon her entry. Baney would extinguish the threat in the top of the eighth, punching out Runyan and Lynn back-to-back to get the Huskies back on offense. Hall began the bottom half of the eighth with a single through the left side, before advancing all the way to third on a sacrifice bunt by Mayhew. With one out, Wheeland stepped to the plate and delivered the walk-off sacrifice fly to center to score Hall and end the game.
The Huskies scored three runs on seven hits and did not commit an error in the win. Hall led the offense with a 3-4 game including a double, while scoring twice. Four others each tallied hits in the game, with Wheeland driving in all three runs and also scoring once. Baney (4-5) got the win in relief, recording two strikeouts in 0.2 innings. Davies dazzled for 7.1 innings, allowing just two runs on eight hits without issuing a walk and also registering five punch-outs.
Clarion would begin game two with aggressiveness, executing a double-steal that plated the first run. Runyan stole second and Nonnenburg beat the throw home on the play. The Huskies matched Clarion in the first inning, with a RBI double from Wheeland scoring
Taylor Winkelman (Springfield, Pa/Springfield). The Huskies would scratch across another run in the second, starting when
Emily Getz (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) got on with a one-out single up the middle. Baney popped up to short for the second out, before
Erin Smith (Tunkhannock, Pa./Tunkhannock Area) reached on a fielding error by Clarion's first baseman. After the initial error, Golden Eagle first baseman Alexis Boie threw the ball away allowing Getz to move to third. Getz would score unearned and Smith would advance on a passed ball later in the inning. The Huskies would explode for eight runs in the bottom of the third to pull away, beginning with a single to right center by Mayhew. Wheeland's second double of the game moved Mayhew to third, before
Marissa Shelhamer (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) executed a textbook bunt and reached on a single scoring Mayhew and advancing Wheeland to third.
Kelsey Impink (Schwenksville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) would join the hit parade dropping a single into right center to score Wheeland, before Getz would reach on an another error by Boie and advance to second on the throw home to try to nab Shelhamer who scored on the play. Baney would break things open with a two-RBI double to right center that scored both Getz and Impink. After a pitching change, Smith would continue the inning with an infield single, before the ball was thrown away allowing Baney to score. After two outs were recorded in the inning, Mayhew came up with some two-out lightning with a double down the left field line that scored Smith unearned. The inning would continue when Wheeland was hit by a pitch and Shelhamer drew a walk to load the bases. Impink was then plunked, scoring Mayhew unearned. The Huskies led 10-1 through three innings. Clarion would respond with one run in the fourth when Lynn got caught off of third base in a run down with two outs. The ball was thrown away in the frenzy allowing Lynn to score unearned. Clarion would score two more runs in the fifth, with Macy Rubin scoring on a passed ball and Nonnenburg being driven home on a single to center by Runyan. With the eight-run mercy rule not in play, the Golden Eagles forced the game to be played to its length. They plated two in the seventh, with Nonnenburg scoring on a wild pitch and Runyan later scoring on a groundout by Lynn. The Huskies would shut it down from there to complete the sweep.
The Huskies scored 10 runs on 12 hits while committing four errors in the game two win. Three Huskies tallied two hits apiece, while six other Huskies each notched one hit in the win. Baney and Impink each drove in two runs, while four others drove home one run each in the win. Mayhew and Getz each scored twice, with six others crossing the plate one time each. Baney (5-5) collected her second win of the day, firing a complete game. She surrendered six runs, four earned on seven hits while issuing two free passes and racking up 11 strikeouts.
The sweep moves the Huskies to 11-12 and 3-3 in the PSAC Central divison, while Clarion falls to 4-16 and 1-3 in the division.
The Huskies are back at Jan M. Hutchinson Field on Sunday (Apr. 8) for a division doubleheader with Mansfield. The games are being made up from Mar. 30. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
