BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg University softball team was swept at home on Sunday (Apr. 8) by Mansfield, losing game one 4-3 and game two 6-4 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Central division action.
The Huskies opened the scoring in game one with two runs in the bottom of the first, coming on a
Marissa Shelhamer (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) sacrifice fly that scored
Taylor Winkelman (Springfield, Pa/Springfield) and an
Abbey Remley (Berwick, Pa./Berwick Area) single up the middle that scored
Maggie Hall (Cooperstown, N.Y./Cooperstown). Mansfield would cut the lead in half in the top of the third when Rachel Sterner recorded a sacrifice fly that sored Jonelle Snyder unearned. The Huskies would move their lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth when
Emily Mayhew (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) singled home Winkelman, and the game would be scoreless from there until the seventh. Mansfield would deliver a big blow in the top of the seventh, scoring three runs to take a 4-3 lead. They score all three runs with two outs, with the rally starting on a single to right field by Koryn Wickwire. After Wickwire was lifted for pinch runner Alex Hein, Alli McGovern singled through the left side to move Hein to second. Sterner would draw a walk to load the bases, setting the stage for Casey Pearce. Pearce lifted the 1-0 pitch into the left center gap, and the ball found green just inches out of the reach of a diving Mayhew. The hit cleared the bases and gave the Mountaineers the 4-3 lead for good.
Bloomsburg scored three runs on 12 hits while committing one error in the loss. Winkelman posted a 4-4 effort with two runs scored to lead the offense, while Hall was 3-4 with one run scored. Remley was also 2-3 in the effort while Mayhew,
Kalynn Wheeland (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport) and Shelhamer each had one hit in the game. Remley, Mayhew and Shelhamer each drove in runs in the game.
Alyssa Davies (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood) (3-5) took the tough loss in the circle in a complete game effort. The redshirt junior allowed four runs, three earned on seven hits while walking four and striking out two.
Mansfield would open the scoring in game two in the top of the second with Pearce scoring on a groundout by Melanie Taylor, before the Huskies would knot the game up in their half of the second. After Wheeland led off with a double to right center, a groundout up the middle by Shelhamer advanced Wheeland 60 feet further to third. Wheeland would score on a wild pitch during
Emily Getz (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown)'s at-bat. Mansfield would plate their second run in the top of the third on a RBI double from Sterner that scored Alli McGovern to take a 2-1 lead. The game would be scoreless from there until the bottom of the fifth when BU would put together a big inning of their own. Three runs in the bottom of the fifth put the Huskies up 4-2, beginning with a two-out walk drawn by
Bridget Casey (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge). The walk turned the card over for Winkelman, who laced the first pitch she saw through the left side to move Casey to second. Hall would keep the inning alive with a single up the middle that scored Casey from second, moved Winkelman to third and allowed herself to advance to second on the throw home. Mayhew would follow it up with a RBI single through the left side to score Winkelman and move Hall to third. Wheeland would score Hall on a RBI single through the left side to score the third run of the inning and leave BU ahead 4-2 heading to the sixth. After a scoreless sixth, Mansfield would again do damage in the seventh with four runs to take a 6-4 lead for good.
Abby Wild (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) had relieved fellow freshman
Tara Baney (Howard, Pa./Bellefonte) in the circle back in the fifth, and now it was Wild's game to close. The inning began with not so good a start for Wild, as back-to-back walks to Devin Jones and Snyder put the tying run on base with no one out. Wickwire would single up the middle to score Jones and move Snyder to second, before Alli McGovern would lay down a sacrifice bunt to move both runners up with one out. Once again, it was a Sterner double that put the Mountaineers ahead for good. Sterner's second double of the afternoon scored both Wickwire and Snyder to put MU up 5-4. Baney was called back out in relief of Wild, and after getting the second out allowed one more run on a single to center field by Anastasia Hester to score pinch runner Hein. The Huskies could not recover in the bottom half of the seventh, and Mansfield was able to secure the road sweep.
It was Wheeland who paced the BU offense in game two with a 2-3 effort, one RBI and a run scored while four others recorded hits in the loss. Winkelman, Hall and Casey also scored runs in the game, while Hall and Mayhew each drove in one run. Wild (3-3) took the loss in game two, allowing four runs on two hits over two innings. She walked three and struck out one in the effort. Baney fired five innings allowing two runs on five hits while walking two and striking out three.
The Huskies fall to 11-14 and 3-5 in the PSAC Central division, while Mansfield moves to 5-4 overall and 3-1 in the PSAC Central.
The Huskies are back at home at Jan M. Hutchinson Field on Friday (Apr. 13) when they jump back into PSAC Central play hosting IUP. First pitch for the doubleheader is slated for 2:30 p.m.
