Men's Soccer Opens Season With 2-0 Shutout Win At Shepherd

HTML BOX SCORE

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W. Va. - The Bloomsburg University men's soccer team scored a pair of second-half goals on Thursday afternoon en route to a 2-0 shutout victory at Shepherd University, giving Danny Wheelan a victory in his first game as the Huskies' head coach. The contest marked the first game of the 2018 campaign for both teams.

Despite outshooting the Rams, 7-3, in the opening half, the Huskies could not Shepherd's freshman goalkeeper Jose Machado Orellana during a scoreless 45 minutes of action. But, it did not take Bloomsburg to strike in the second half as sophomore Thomas King (West Chester, Pa./B. Reed Henderson) buried his first collegiate goal just 3:25 into the second stanza to give the Huskies a 1-0 advantage. Sophomore Carter Luckenbaugh (York, Pa./Central York), who led the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) in assists with 11 last season, picked up where he left off as he earned a helper on King's tally.

Bloomsburg maintained the pressure and picked up an insurance goal in the 84th minute when junior Matt Goodall (Perry Hall, Md./Perry Hall) drilled a shot past Machado Orellana off of a corner kick from King to extend the Huskies' advantage to 2-0. It was Goodall's third career goal after scoring a pair of markers last season.

Sophomore goalkeeper Trey Orner (Lancaster, Pa./Conestoga Valley), making his first career start at Bloomsburg, turned aside three Shepherd shots to preserve the shutout. Meanwhile, Machado Orellana was tested often and was credited with nine saves in his first collegiate start for the Rams.

Bloomsburg out-shot Shepherd, 23-5, including a 16-2 margin in the second half. The Huskies also held significant advantages in shots on goal (12-3) and corner kicks (9-2). Sophomore Lael Cherry (Gros Islet, St. Lucia/Castries Comprehensive) had a game-high six shot attempts for the Huskies in the victory.

The Huskies return to action on Saturday, September 1, when they host Bloomfield College in the team's home opener. Kickoff from Steph Pettit Stadium is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
