BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - Senior
Kevin Rodriguez (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) scored seven minutes into the second half and sophomore goalkeeper
Trey Orner (Lancaster, Pa./Conestoga Valley) made the lead stand as the Bloomsburg University men's soccer team improved to 2-0 on the young season with a 1-0 victory over visiting Bloomfield College on Saturday evening at Steph Pettit Stadium. It marked the first game of the season for the Bears.
After a scoreless first half that saw Bloomfield outshoot the Huskies, 6-1, Rodriguez scored in the 52nd minute to give the hosts a 1-0 lead. Sophomore
Lael Cherry (Gros Islet, St. Lucia/Castries Comprehensive) led an offensive rush into the Bloomfield end and centered a pass to Rodriguez who one-timed a shot past Bears' goalkeeper Robert Kornel for what proved to be the only goal of the contest. It was Rodriguez' first goal of the season and his first career game-winning tally.
Bloomfield held the edge over Bloomsburg in both shots, 13-8, and corner kicks, 6-2. Orner was credited with five saves for his second consecutive shutout to start the season. The sophomore made a huge diving save early in the match to rob Bloomfield's Bryan Medina and then got some help from sophomore defender
Kelvy Gomez (Effort, Pa./Pleasant Valley) late in the first half. Medina took a shot that beat Orner to the far side but Gomez was there to stop the attempt from crossing the goal line, helping to preserve the shutout.
Kornel stopped two shots in a losing effort for the Bears.
The Huskies will look to make it three consecutive wins to start the season when they entertain Jefferson University on Wednesday, September 5. Start time from Steph Pettit Stadium is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
