LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Senior
Tali Wehner (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg) scored in the sixth round of shootouts on Saturday afternoon to lift the Bloomsburg University field hockey team to a 3-2 victory over Lindenwood in a contest played at Bellarmine University. The contest marked the opening game for both teams in the 2018 season.
Each team scored three times in the opening set of five shootouts, forcing sudden victory to determine a winner. After sophomore goalkeeper
Hannah Barnard (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) kept Lindenwood's Pauline Terwindt from scoring to open the sixth round, Wehner beat Lions' goalkeeper Emma Deines to give the Huskies a win in their first game of the year. Wehner, a Second Team All-American last season, entered her senior season with just one goal in 56 career games.
The Huskies wasted little time getting on the board as junior
Tesa Hoffman (Freeburg, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) scored off of a penalty corner just 4:42 into the contest to give Bloomsburg a 1-0 advantage. Hoffman, who scored a pair of goals for the Huskies last season, attempted a game-high ten shots - five on net - on Saturday afternoon. Lindenwood, as a team, attempted ten shots during the entire contest. Senior
Erica Krebs (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) was credited with the assist on Hoffman's goal. The Lions, however, responded just under seven minutes later as Bridget Hoogendijk beat Barnard to tie the game at 1-1.
Bloomsburg recaptured the lead seven-and-a-half minutes into the second half when Krebs beat Lindenwood starter, Skylar Starbeck, from seven yards out after a centering pass from junior
Ali McKay (Dover, Del./Polytech). But, Hoogendijk notched her second goal of the game just over five minutes later to knot the game at 2-2 which ultimately led to overtime and Wehner's heroics in the shootout round.
Bloomsburg out-shot Lindenwood, 27-10, which included a 7-1 margin during the two ten-minute overtime periods. The Huskies also held a significant edge in penalty corners, 18-9. Barnard earned her first victory of the season and was credited with five saves in the win. Starbeck started for the Lions and made 13 saves but gave way to Deines prior to the start of the shootouts.
During the shootouts, Wehner, Krebs, and freshman
Foto Tsioles (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) each scored to keep pace with the Lions during the opening set of five.
The Huskies will return to action on Monday, September 3, when they take on Bellarmine University. Start time is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
