Women's Soccer Stays Hot; Shuts Out Lock Haven 2-0 Wednesday Evening

HTML BOX SCORE

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - Freshman Kate Schlotter (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) notched her first collegiate goal just 2:48 into the contest and sophomore Alex Burrows (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) added an insurance tally in the 65th minute as the Bloomsburg University women's soccer team continued its hot start to the 2018 season with a 2-0 victory over visiting Lock Haven University on Wednesday evening at Steph Pettit Stadium. The Huskies improved to 4-1 overall and 4-1 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) standings while the Bald Eagles dropped to 2-2 overall and 2-2 in league play.

The Huskies wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as junior Megan Callan (Sykesville, Md./Century) centered a pass into the box that Schlotter was able to one-time past Lock Haven goalkeeper Bree Hilty for a 1-0 advantage just 2:48 into the match. The goal was Schlotter's first career marker while Callan picked up her first point of the season with the assist.

Shots were dead even at 5-5 in the opening half with the Huskies holding a slim, 2-1, edge in corner kicks.

In the 63rd minute, redshirt sophomore Jenna Hawkins (Fleetwood, Pa./Fleetwood) made the save of the night for the Huskies as she robbed Marah Foltz on a scoring opportunity from just outside the box. Hawkins dove to her right and was able to deflect the curling shot wide of the post to keep the Bald Eagles off the scoreboard. After the ensuing corner kick was thwarted by the Huskies' defense, the Bloomsburg offense seemed to get a spark from Hawkins' save as they scored just over two minutes later to take a 2-0 lead. Sophomore Lauren Hoelke (Blackwood, N.J./Highland Regional) took a corner kick for the Huskies and played a perfect ball into the box that Burrows was able to head over the outstretched arm of Hilty for her second goal of the season and her second goal in as many games.

Hawkins and the defense did the rest as they kept the Bald Eagles at bay and off the scoreboard for the team's fourth shutout victory of the season. Bloomsburg, in fact, has allowed only two goals through five games this season with both coming in the 2-1 loss at Millersville last Wednesday.

Lock Haven held a slight, 12-11, advantage in shot attempts on the night with Bloomsburg holding a 5-3 edge in corner kicks. Hawkins posted her fourth shutout of the season and improved to 4-1 on the year with a four-save performance. Hilty suffered the loss to drop to 2-2 on the season. She made three saves in defeat for the Bald Eagles.

Bloomsburg will return to action on Saturday afternoon, September 15, when it hosts Gannon University at Steph Pettit Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 p.m.
