BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University women's soccer team suffered its first home loss of the season on Saturday afternoon as the visiting Golden Knights of Gannon University handed the Huskies a 2-0 setback at Steph Pettit Stadium. With the loss, Bloomsburg dropped to 4-2 overall and 4-2 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) standings. Gannon, meanwhile, improved to 4-2 overall and 3-2 in league play.
After a scoreless first half that saw Bloomsburg outshoot Gannon, 5-2, the Golden Knights finally broke through with a pair of goals just 1:36 apart in the second half for the only scoring of the contest. Kayla Bevacqua dented the scoreboard in the 60th minute with her second goal of the season when she picked up a rebound off of a Bloomsburg defender and fired a shot past redshirt sophomore goalkeeper
Jenna Hawkins (Fleetwood, Pa./Fleetwood). Then, just 96 seconds later, an outlet pass from Maddie North found Taylor Lewis behind the Huskies' defense and Lewis was able to beat Hawkins with a shot just under the crossbar for her fifth goal of the year to extend the lead to 2-0.
The Huskies had opportunities down the stretch to get back into the match but they could not beat Gannon's goalkeeping duo of Hannah Pufpaff and Kennedy Solymosi. Junior
Alexis Rostucher (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg) had the best chance just four minutes after the Golden Knights took a 2-0 advantage but Pufpaff was able to make a nice save to keep the Huskies off the scoreboard.
Bloomsburg finished with a 9-4 advantage in shot attempts with both teams recording four shots on goal. The Golden Knights edged the Huskies in corner kicks, 4-3.
Hawkins posted two saves on the afternoon as she saw her record fall to 4-2 on the season. Pufpaff earned the victory with four saves in just under 78 minutes of action. Solymosi played the final 12 minutes and did not record a save.
The Huskies will travel to Erie to square off against the Lakers of Mercyhurst University on Friday, September 21, before returning home to host West Chester University on Sunday, September 23. Start time is set for 3:30 p.m.
