ERIE, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University women's soccer statistically dominated Mercyhurst University on Friday afternoon but the Huskies could not solve Laker goalkeeper Vilde Wold as the teams had to settle for a 0-0 double overtime tie at the Mercyhurst Soccer Field. Bloomsburg moved to 4-2-1 overall with an identical 4-2-1 mark against Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) foes while the Lakers moved to 3-3-1 overall and 1-3-1 in league play.
Bloomsburg held a 19-5 advantage in shots and attempted six corner kicks to Mercyhurst's two on Friday afternoon but the difference was Wold who made 12 saves to preserve the scoreless tie. Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper
Jenna Hawkins (Fleetwood, Pa./Fleetwood), meanwhile, needed to stop only one shot to earn her fifth shutout of the season. She lowered her season goals against average to 0.55 with the effort.
The Huskies held a slim, 3-2, lead in shots in the opening half before heavy rain forced a delay at halftime. Once play resumed, Bloomsburg peppered Wold in the second half to the tune of 11 shots. The Laker netminder stopped all eight shots on net, with four of those coming over the final five minutes of regulation, to send the game to overtime.
Bloomsburg had two shots in the first overtime and took three more shots in the second overtime but Wold turned aside four shots in the two extra sessions to preserve the deadlock. In the first overtime, junior
Jessica Milligan (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) was stopped on a header off of a corner kick and then, in the second overtime, freshman
Nicole Varano (Paxinos, Pa./Mt. Carmel) and senior
Allie Barber (Pittston Township, Pa./Pittston Area) combined for three shots in just over a minute - all of which were stopped by Wold.
Barber, Milligan, and Varano each had four shot attempts and three shots on goal. Freshman
Rachel Clouser (Grantville, Pa./Lower Dauphin) had a pair of shots on goal for the Huskies.
The Huskies return to action on Sunday, September 23, when they host the fifth-ranked Golden Rams of West Chester University in a showdown at Steph Pettit Stadium. Start time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
