BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - Senior
Allie Barber (Pittston Township, Pa./Pittston Area) scored in the 61st minute and redshirt sophomore goalkeeper
Jenna Hawkins (Fleetwood, Pa./Fleetwood) turned aside seven shots as the Bloomsburg University women's soccer team upset the fifth-ranked Golden Rams of West Chester University, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon at Steph Pettit Stadium. With the victory, the Huskies improved to 5-2-1 overall with an identical 5-2-1 mark in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) standings. West Chester suffered its first loss of the season as it fell to 5-1-1 overall and 4-1-1 in league play.
Barber snapped a scoreless tie when she beat West Chester goalkeeper McKenna Mullin on a shot with her left foot that curled just inside the far post for her second goal of the season to give the Huskies a 1-0 advantage. Freshman
Nicole Varano (Paxinos, Pa./Mt. Carmel) earned her first collegiate point with an assist on the goal. Barber's goal proved to be all the offense that Hawkins would need as she posted her PSAC-leading sixth shutout in eight starts this season with a season-high seven-save performance. She made two saves after the Huskies took the lead and also got some help from sophomore
Alex Burrows (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) who kicked away a shot before crossing the goal line in the 70th minute.
The goal was Barber's 15th career goal and her fifth career game-winning marker - first of the 2018 season. It also marked just the second goal allowed on the season by the Golden Rams' defense and snapped a string of 542 minutes of not being scored upon.
The game was back-and-forth throughout as both teams had a number of scoring opportunities with Hawkins and Mullin turning aside a number of shots, especially during a scoreless first half. Bloomsburg held a 10-6 advantage in shots in the first half with Mullin making six first-half saves while Hawkins stopped five. Shots were even at six apiece in the second half to give the Huskies a 16-12 margin in shots for the contest. West Chester held an edge in corner kick opportunities, 5-2.
Hawkins improved to 5-2-1 on the season and lowered her goals against average on the year to 0.49 while increasing her save percentage to .826. She now has not allowed a goal in the last 229:17. Mullin dropped to 5-1-1 on the season and was credited with a season-high nine saves for the Golden Rams.
Bloomsburg will continue PSAC play as it travels to play the Golden Eagles of Clarion University on Saturday September, 29. Start time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Memorial Field.
