CLARION, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University women's soccer team got four second-half goals from four different players and did not allow a shot attempt all afternoon as the Huskies went on the road and blanked Clarion University, 4-0, on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium. The Huskies improved to 6-2-1 overall with an identical 6-2-1 mark in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) standings while the Golden Eagles dropped to 2-8 overall and 1-8 in league play.
Despite outshooting Clarion, 10-0, in the opening half, Bloomsburg was unable to dent the scoreboard as Clarion starting goalkeeper Krista Mosi turned aside four Huskies' shots in the opening 45 minutes.
The match remained scoreless until the 54th minute when senior
Allie Barber (Pittston Township, Pa./Pittston Area) notched her third goal of the season off of an assist from freshman
Nicole Varano (Paxinos, Pa./Mt. Carmel). It was Barber's second goal in as many games as she scored Bloomsburg's lone goal in the upset victory over West Chester last Sunday. The goal also proved to be the game-winner - her second of the season and sixth of her collegiate career. Meanwhile, the helper was Varano's second of the season as she is now tied for the team lead in that department.
Just four minutes later, sophomore
Mackenzie Gebhardt (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) notched her first goal of the season as she came up with a rebound off of a Clarion defender during a corner kick opportunity and beat Mosi to extend the Huskies' advantage to 2-0. Gebhardt scored five goals as a freshman a year ago. Two minutes later, in the 60th minute, sophomore
Lauren Hoelke (Blackwood, N.J./Highland Regional) received an outlet pass from Barber and beat Mosi for her first goal of the year to balloon the Bloomsburg margin to 3-0. Barber collected her first assist of the season as she was credited with the helper.
Sophomore
Sam Rodkey (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove) put the finishing touches on the scoring in the 81st minute as she beat Clarion backup netminder Brigid Stermel for her first goal of the season. Rodkey scored three goals last year during her freshman campaign.
Bloomsburg not only blanked Clarion on the scoreboard but also blanked the Golden Eagles in shot attempts, 21-0. The Huskies also had a significant 9-0 margin in corner kick opportunities. Redshirt sophomore
Jenna Hawkins (Fleetwood, Pa./Fleetwood) made the start and improved to 6-2-1 on the season. Hawkins played the first 78:29 and then gave way to sophomore
Olivia Schantz (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland) who played the final 11:31 in the combined shutout. It was the Huskies' seventh shutout in nine games this season. Mosi played 65 minutes for Clarion and was credited with seven saves on ten shots. Stermel played the final 25 minutes and stopped one Bloomsburg shot.
The Huskies will be back on the road on Wednesday, October 3, when they head to Shippensburg University to battle the Raiders. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
