BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - Junior
Tyler Madeira (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland) scored two highlight-reel goals just 1:54 apart late in the second half to lift the Bloomsburg University men's soccer team to a stunning, come-from-behind, 2-1 victory over visiting West Chester University on Sunday afternoon at Steph Pettit Stadium. After dropping four consecutive games, the Huskies have won back-to-back contests to even their record at 4-4-0 on the season while also evening their Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) record to 2-2-0 on the year. The Golden Rams suffered just their second loss of the season as they dropped to 4-2-2 overall and 2-1-1 in league play. It was West Chester's first loss in a conference match since a 2-1 setback to Gannon on September 10, 2016 - a string of 22 consecutive PSAC contests.
With the Huskies trailing 1-0, Madeira tied the contest at 1-1 in the 72nd minute when he came up with a loose ball in the box on a throw in from sophomore
Carter Luckenbaugh (York, Pa./Central York) and bicycle kicked a shot past West Chester goalkeeper Will Marshall for his second goal of the season. Luckenbaugh earned his second assist of the year on the game-tying goal. Then, following a foul by West Chester in the 74th minute, Madeira took the free kick from roughly 25 yards out and fired a shot over the Golden Rams' wall and past Marshall low and just inside the near post to give the Huskies a 2-1 lead. The two goals marked the first career multiple-goal effort for Madeira and his final goal of the afternoon was his first collegiate game-winning tally.
Madeira entered the season with one goal in his first two years with the Huskies but now leads the team in scoring with three goals and two assists for eight points.
West Chester scored its only goal of the afternoon in the 23rd minute when, after a throw in, Craig Potts picked up a rebound off of a Bloomsburg defender and beat sophomore goalkeeper
Brock Gould (York, Pa./Red Lion) for his first goal of the season.
The 6-foot-6-inch Gould, however, stood tall the rest of the day as he finished with a season-high eight saves in the victory. Three of those eight saves came in the final 15 minutes after Madeira gave the Huskies the one-goal lead. Bloomsburg also had a team save when junior
Evan Novian (Baltimore, Md./Loyola Blakefield) was able to keep a West Chester attempt from crossing the goal line after it got behind Gould just three minutes into the second half. The Huskies' netminder also got some help from the iron as West Chester hit a post and a crossbar on the afternoon.
West Chester outshot Bloomsburg, 20-7, for the contest including a 12-4 margin in the second half. The Golden Rams also had four corner kicks - all in the second half - to Bloomsburg's none.
Gould improved to 2-1 overall on the season with his eight-save performance. Meanwhile, Marshall suffered his first loss of the season for the Golden Rams as he fell to 3-1-1 on the year. He was credited with just one save on the day.
The Huskies will take a break from PSAC play as they host Daemen College on Wednesday, September 26. Start time from Steph Pettit Stadium is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
