BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University women's tennis team opened the 2018-19 season in strong fashion as the Huskies welcomed Shippensburg University, East Stroudsburg University, and Wilkes University in the annual Bloomsburg Women's Invitational at the Burt Reese Tennis Center on Saturday and Sunday.
The Huskies started the weekend by winning six of the seven singles matches against East Stroudsburg and then swept Wilkes in three doubles contests. In the final round of day one, the Huskies swept Shippensburg in six singles matches and earned another singles win over East Stroudsburg to conclude the opening day of action.
During the opening day, five Huskies posted two singles victories and one doubles win. Sophomore
Giovanna Bonito (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Reino) lost just one game in earning two singles wins and one doubles victory. She swept East Stroudsburg's Amanda Jackson - 6-0, 6-0 - at number four singles and then teamed up with junior
Taylor Capoferri (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) for an 8-0 win at #2 doubles over Wilkes' duo of Sarah Malone and Rachel Thomas. She finished day one with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Shippensburg's Kayla Tryanski. Senior
Cassie Wentz (Windber, Pa./Winber Area) and juniors Capoferri,
Cassidy Calimer (Egg Harbor City, N.J./Absegami), and
Vitoria Nery (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Educandário Santa Maria Goretti) were also a perfect three-for-three on Saturday with each earning two singles and one doubles victory. Sophomore
Haille Hoeflein (Easton, Pa./Easton) had two singles wins while senior
Siena Cerra (Levittown, Pa./Neshaminy) had one singles win and one doubles victory.
On Sunday morning, Bloomsburg kept its hot streak going as the Huskies were victorious in three out of four singles matches against Wilkes and earned another win in singles against East Stroudsburg. Bloomsburg completed the weekend by going a perfect two-for-two in doubles against the Raiders.
Capoferri, Bonito, and Hoeflein each earned one singles win and one doubles win on Sunday. Calimer added a singles win while Cerra teamed up with Hoeflein for a doubles victory.
The Bloomsburg men's and women's tennis teams will host the 2018 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Singles and Doubles Championships beginning next Saturday, September 29 at the Burt Reese Tennis Center. Day two will take place on Sunday, September 30 with a weather date scheduled for Monday, October 1.
