#8 Field Hockey Edges #5 Millersville, 3-2, Tuesday Night

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - The eighth-ranked Bloomsburg University field hockey team snapped a ten-game losing streak against fifth-ranked Millersville University on Tuesday night as the Huskies hung on for a 3-2 victory in a battle of top ten teams at Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium. With the win, Bloomsburg improved to 4-1 overall while the Marauders dropped to 3-2 on the season.

The Huskies had not defeated the Marauders since a 1-0 victory back on September 19, 2012, but got goals from sophomore Emily Alker (Cresco, Pa./Pocono Mountain East), senior Erica Krebs (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia), and junior Tesa Hoffman (Freeburg, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) and then received a season-high tying eight saves from sophomore Hannah Barnard (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) on Tuesday night to snap the skid against the Marauders.

Alker scored the only goal of the first half when she tipped an initial shot from junior Ali McKay (Dover, Del./Polytech) past Millersville's starting goalkeeper Katie Baker less than five minutes into the contest. It was Alker's first goal of the season and second of her collegiate career. McKay, with the assist, tied Hoffman for the team-high in that category with three.

The Huskies held the 1-0 lead at intermission despite being outshot, 6-1, by the Maruaders in the opening half.

Krebs extended the advantage to 2-0 just over five minutes into the second half when she stripped the ball from a Marauder defender and beat Baker for her fourth goal of the season. Just minutes later, Baker, who faced only two shots and allowed two goals, was pulled for Kristy Campana.

The move sparked Millersville initially as it finally solved Barnard when Erica Tarsi scored her fourth goal of the season off of a penalty corner from Kyra Brakefield with just under 22 minutes left in regulation. But, the momentum was short-lived as the Huskies regained the two-goal lead at 3-1 just eight seconds later when, off of a corner from junior Willow Perkins (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia), Hoffman fired a shot from the top of the circle past Campana for her team-leading fifth goal of the season.

Tarsi made things interesting again when she notched her second of the game, and fifth of the season, with 12 minutes left in regulation to trim the Huskies lead to 3-2. But, Barnard and the Bloomsburg defense were able to hold the Marauders off the board the rest of the night to preserve the one-goal victory.

Millersville held a 13-5 advantage in shots during the second half which gave it a 19-6 margin for the contest. The Marauders also held a significant edge in penalty corners, 13-3. Barnard improved to 4-1 on the season with her eight-save performance. Baker and Campana combined to make just one save on the night for the Marauders.

Bloomsburg will be back at Steph Pettit Stadium on Saturday, September 29 against Slippery Rock for a non-conference contest. Start time is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
